About

Soft-Spoken • Perceptive • Zealot • Patient

Photine is a devoted nun from the far North who has been tasked with a very high and special honor -- spreading the words and teachings of the false prophet; Ayanthis. She is a woman of faux faith, selling snake oils and liquid hope for anyone desperate enough to buy her truth. By appearance alone, she seems like a feeble and delicate mare, a deep sadness to her that tends to linger in her glances; a soft shyness. She is extremely soft-spoken, and genuinely believes she’s doing the right thing -- to coax the fears of death from one’s mind can not be a bad thing. Photine’s desire to heal comes from a true place of compassion, but her methods are questionable at best.

Unicorn blood runs through her veins; if only but a few drops -- just enough to gift her a sixth sense of sorts. Much to her dismay, Photine believes she has been cursed by the gods to hear the undead as a punishment for her sins. She tries her best to live by the holy code, but no matter how many prayers she gives to these artificial deities her powers only grow stronger with age.

Summary

Nestled among rolling green hills and fertile soil was the town of Barneburrow, it was filled with perhaps not the richest of people but for sure some of the most hardworking. A farm town by trade with a friendly enough community that valued tradition, manners, and lots of arduous labor. This is where Photine Frey Orlaith was born into a family of ten as the youngest member-- more hands meant more work could get done around the farm but it also meant more mouths to feed.

It was the autumn of her third birthday when a mysterious group of strangers arrived in their wholesome little town, their words tasted of milk and honey. They managed to seduce a few of the villagers to abandon their roots and join them, meet the prophet himself, and learn from his church up in the North. The Orlaith family received their visit from the cult, but the words didn’t seem to stick -- they had always been poor farmers but it was simply their way of life. However, the eldest sister of the religious group took a great interest in the smallest filly. The child was a delicate and feeble little thing but the way she seemed to stare at nothing at all and spoke to the wind as if she was speaking to a dear friend intrigued the older woman greatly -- perhaps this child could be one of their children for the right price.

Money to help feed a struggling family for the upcoming harsh winter was exchanged -- the item sold was a shameful choice. Photine was told she paid the price for her family’s sins, she still takes pride in that to this day knowing she saved them from death that winter -- they are but a golden sweetened memory these days.

Raised by the sisters of the church, the small filly grew into a shy and reserved young mare. Virgin and pure in every way, keeping her growing supernatural gift a shameful secret not wanting to be punished for hearing the demon’s whispers. Even when traveling she exchanges letters with the sisters and mother often, she considers them the closest thing she will ever have to a family. -- she was chosen to travel by the leader of the church himself; Ayanthis. He always favored her, as she was so young and impressionable she drank their religion as if she was dying of thirst.

Upon her travels, she has encountered a very alarming new fact about herself -- with every growing year, her connection to the supernatural only seems to grow stronger and stronger. Unaware of her unicorn blood she has decided it must be punishment for her sinful ways -- no matter how hard she repents…

It only gets worse.

Clementine

A former sex worker who was falsely accused of witchcraft after committing adultery with a powerful nobleman. Photine took this misguided soul under her wing, not out of the goodness of her heart, but rather the fact that she was being haunted by the woman's dead brother. He promised to stop haunting if she saved his sister's life, and so converting her to the church was the only option. Clementine has no real interest in becoming a woman of the gods, so she's unsure why this strange mare saved her life. However, she also has no interest in dying so as far as she is concerned Photine is her best friend. Photine would not agree.

Ayanthis

The False Prophet & Leader of the Church of Skaithois that Photine is a part of. They are a doe who wears a crown of golden antlers, they have raised Photine as their own and keep her very close due to their own fear of the supernatural. Photine believes that they can hear the voices of the gods and is their one true mouthpiece. His word is her truth and her law. They go by all pronouns.

Sterling

A wounded soldier that Photine met while in the kingdom of Abroux, she sold him her snake oil and lies, and just like all the others he died after placing his hope in a false prophet. His soul was restless and came back with a vengeance, plaguing the woman who bound his soul to the earth. To find peace, he demanded one thing, that Photine save his sister who was to be killed at dawn for adultery. With no other choice, Photine vouched for the young woman and vowed to clean her up and make her a proper woman of the gods. Satisfied with that Sterling follows the two and serves a conscience for the questionable mare.
