― Torikai Suzu

Suzu Torikai (鳥養 鈴 Torikai Suzu) was a first-year student from Nekoma High and the boys' volleyball team's manager. She is currently an animator for a large video game development company.

Appearance

Suzu is a petite girl with fair skin. She has long, wavy brown hair that she likes to wear in different styles. No matter the style, she likes to keep her bangs out of her face. She has round golden eyes with vaguely cat-like pupils. She isn't very expressive, so she can mostly be seen with a blank or disinterested look on her face. She has surprisingly good posture from being a dancer.

She can often be seen wearing her school uniform, which consists of a white sailor-style shirt, a navy bow, a navy skirt, and black socks. While doing club activities, she wears a red tracksuit and a black shirt beneath. Her casual clothes often consist of girly clothes often with bright colors.

Personality

Suzu is mainly characterized by her air-headed and disinterested personality. She is easily distracted and loses interest in things quickly, which means she often doesn't finish her tasks and she wanders off a lot. She doesn't put a lot of effort into things that do not interest her, which is almost everything. She could even be described as lazy. She is usually inexpressive, not showing much emotion when she speaks. She is very free-spirited, and she doesn't normally listen to people or follow directions. There are only a few people that she consistently listens to, including Kuroo and her sister. She can be a bit childish when it comes to things like this, sometimes purposefully not listening to someone just to spite them. She is an honest person that always says exactly what she means, even if what she says can be brutal. She usually doesn't mean any harm by it, but sometimes she can be a bit of a devil on purpose, although she denies it.

She has a surprisingly good memory when she tries, despite her absent-mindedness. She is good at remembering routines and such, she just doesn't put effort into remembering what she doesn't feel like remembering. It has been said that she would probably do really well in school if she would just put effort into remembering the material she learned. She mostly just does the bare minimum of work, but does surprisingly well on tests. She is also very dedicated to the people she considers her friends, though it takes her a bit of time to warm up to people. She puts in the most effort for people she considers her friends, and she becomes more expressive around them. She can also be quite eager to get praise from people she respects, sometimes doing things just to earn that praise.

Background

Even at a young age, Suzu was a free spirit. She was constantly wandering off and getting lost, so she had to be watched at all times. She always seemed to move to the beat of her own drum, not following anyone's guidelines. She often got in trouble for not doing as she was told, simply because she didn't feel like it (though she eventually overcame this). The only person she seemed to somewhat consistently listen to was her older sister, Yori. However, she also had feelings of jealousy and inferiority towards her sister. Yori was smart and talented in everything she did, and she was seemingly perfect. Her parents wished for her to be smart and responsible like her sister, so they set high expectations for her. Suzu always felt inadequate, thinking she could never be as good as her sister. Because of this, she began to feel tense around her sister, avoiding her when she could. Also because of this, she stopped putting effort into most things she did.

Suzu didn't seem to take much interest in anything or anyone. She could have even been described as selfish and lazy. She didn't have any goals or ambitions, and she didn't apply herself to anything. The only thing she appeared to really enjoy doing was dancing. Seeing the interest she had for this, her parents signed her up for dance lessons. Since then, she has improved to become an exceptional dancer. She has performed in dance recitals, and she did well in competitions. However, she had some limitations placed on her because of her height. Most dancers weren't as short as she is, so she was often overlooked. However, she didn't mind this much, as she wasn't interested in being competitive. She only did it for fun.

In junior high at Keisetsu, her sister was the boys' volleyball club's manager. Suzu also attended Keisetsu after her sister, but she wasn't involved in any clubs. Still, she was well known as Yori's younger sister. Yori was also the boys' volleyball club's manager in high school, where she attended Nekoma High School. She proved to be a good manager, and the boys were fond of her. When she graduated, she needed to find a replacement. She asked Suzu to fill her position, as the younger girl would be entering high school as Yori was leaving it. Suzu had no interest in volleyball, so she didn't want to do it. However, her sister begged, and she couldn't find a good reason to refuse, as she wasn't planning on joining any other clubs. She eventually accepted. She was definitely not as good a manager as her sister, and it was clear that she wasn't too keen on being there in the beginning. She didn't pay attention during practice, and she often had to be corrected in her tasks. She didn't understand how anyone could love a sport that they didn't even play, like her sister. However, as she grew closer to the members of the team, she began to want to put more effort in so that she could help them. While she still wasn't overly enthusiastic about volleyball, she did her best for the players on the team she had come to love.

After high school, she moved into an apartment with Kuroo and began attending college to be a video game animator. She graduated a year early and began working at a large video game development company. She was seen as a very talented animator, and she used her background in dance to help her create fluid and lifelike animations.

Suzu is more athletic than she looks. While she isn't strong, she can jump fairly high and far and she has decent stamina thanks to her background in dancing. She is quite nimble and light on her feet. While she doesn't know much about volleyball other than the basics, she is quick to pick up on strategies and techniques. However, she can't apply those techniques and is pretty awful at playing volleyball. She has been putting more effort into understanding volleyball lately.

Skills

  • Quick learner: Once she starts putting in the effort to understand volleyball, she actually picks up on it very quickly.

Relationships

Torikai Yori

[ Suzu-chan || Nēchan ]

They were close as they were growing up, with Yori always looking out for Suzu and trying to be a role model for her. Yori was one of the only people Suzu would consistently listen to. As Suzu got older, she began to constantly get compared to her sister, and she began developing feelings of inadequacy. This put strain on their relationship. Suzu still loved her sister, but she found it hard to be hard around and she started to avoid her. Yori never noticed this and went along like everything was normal. After Yori left to go to college, Suzu began to feel like everything was better, but she could still feel the strain any time Yori came home. One time when Yori came home, Suzu tried to run away because she felt like her family didn't want her. After seeing how worried her family was, she came home and talked it out with them. When Yori heard how Suzu felt, she felt incredibly guilty. She told Suzu that that there were things Suzu could do that Yori couldn't and that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. After this, their relationship got better, and they are now just as close as they were as children.

Kuroo Tetsurō

[ Torikai / Suzu || Kuroo-senpai / Tetsu ]

At first, Kuroo just saw Suzu as someone that he had to constantly look out for. She reminded him of Kenma, so he was familiar with how to deal with her. As captain, he felt that it was his responsibility to watch out for her to make sure she wasn't wandering off or anything. Out of everyone on the team, he was the best at finding her when she wandered off. He became on of the only people she consistently listened to, and she was the only person on the team she referred to as "senpai." She trusted him, and he was often the one she went to for help. He became quite fond of her, just as the rest of the team did. When Suzu began to put more effort into volleyball in order to help the team, it sometimes seemed like she would do things just so that Kuroo would praise her. She would do something, then look expectantly at him with big eyes until he praised her. They began to date right before Kuroo graduated high school, and they moved in together after Suzu graduated.

They get along very well. Kuroo teases Suzu a lot, especially about her small size, but she is fully capable of teasing him right back. He always looks out for her. He gets frustrated with her when she wanders off, but he usually gets over it quickly. She places a lot of trust in him, saying that she's never worried when she gets lost because she knows he'll find her. In public, she is just as aloof and indifferent as usual, holding hands being the extent of what she'll do. However, in private, she is very affectionate. She likes to cuddle and be as close to him as possible. He has compared her to a cat demanding attention and crawling all over someone to get it.

Kozume Kenma

[ Torikai || Kenma-san ]

Suzu is fond of Kenma. Since they are so similar in personality, they get along well. They would sometimes hide together to get out of work. They often play video games together, but because Suzu is notoriously bad at shooters, Kenma makes fun of her. After Kenma becomes a YouTuber, Suzu sometimes appears as a guest on his channel.

Haiba Lev

[ Torikai || Lev ]

They are in the same class. Suzu found Lev annoying at first, and he was often the victim of her subtle teasing. When Lev would try to talk to her, she would sometimes just ignore him and pretend like she didn't hear him. When she saw how hard he was working to improve his skills in volleyball, she began to respect him more. She eventually warmed up to him, and they became good friends. As blunt as Lev is, he sometimes accidentally insults her, but Suzu either just ignores him or retaliates by insulting him back.

Yaku Morisuke

[ Torikai || Yaku-san ]

Suzu is also very fond of Yaku. He is also one of the only people she'll listen to. When Lev accidentally insults her, Yaku is usually the one to scold him. She has a lot of respect for Yaku, who in turn looks out for her as a mother would a child. Because of this, some people jokingly refer to him as Suzu's mother.

Sasano Kanae

[ Suzu-chan || Kanae ]

They met at Tōkyō's Spring High qualifiers during their first year. They both got separated from their teams and decided to wait to be found together. While waiting, Kanae admitted that she sometimes feels like she doesn't contribute much to her team, a feeling that Suzu related to. Kanae shared her thoughts about that feeling, saying that no matter where someone goes, they'll always find something that only they can do. Suzu took her words to heart and began to respect Kanae. After that, they remained in contact, and they are good friends.

Shimizu Kiyoko and Yachi Hitoka

[ Suzu-chan || Kiyoko-san, Hitoka ]

Suzu met Kiyoko at the first practice game between Nekoma and Karasuno, and she met Yachi at the first summer training camp. They get along well, and they became quite close during the training camp.
