CHILDHOOD
Born as the only child to a minor lord of the Gautier estate, Percival spent their childhood as a lonely, quiet child who caught bugs outdoors, read only the oldest and most faded and forgotten books in their father’s library, and looked after Demeter - a snow griffon they had been gifted on their 9th birthday. Up until their stay at the academy they considered Demeter to be their only friend, chatting with her and even sleeping in the hay with her. Percival is very defensive of their friend due to the way she is mistreated by stablehands from their home and at the academy as griffons aren’t present in Fódlan, so they have done lots of research to learn how to care for her properly.
ACADEMY PHASE
During their time at the academy, Percival retains much of their reclusive nature, avoiding talking to most other students and only speaking in the shortest statements possible if they must. They use overly-formal speech when talking to others, outdated by even the typical noble’s standard, refusing to call others by anything other than their last name and a title such as “Sire” or “Madam” regardless of their actual status. The only times they seem to come out of their shell is when they have an excuse to talk about their special interests in bugs, griffons or obscure knight tales, but their sudden enthusiasm can unnerve most people who aren’t expecting it from them.
WAR PHASE
Once the war was declared, Percival became impulsive amongst the confusion and opted to run away from home with Demeter, traveling across Fódlan alone with her and helping villages and commoners that were afflicted by the war until their class’ reunion 5 years later. Their time alone and the struggles they faced changed their demeanor considerably; although they were still stoic, formal and short-spoken, they now held themself with more confidence and their speech habits had noticeably toned down from their strict adherence to old formal speech.
POST WAR
Percival has 3 separate fates after the war ends, split into alternate universes mostly based on whom they have a paired ending with. You can see them in more detail in the relationships tabs at the bottom of their profile. Their first and most canon is with Dimitri as the Kingdom's head knight, the second with Dorothea as a famous opera playwright, and the third with them becoming a history professor at the Officers Academy along with Annette and Linhardt.

Dimitri was one of the only people Percival would not act shy around when they first joined the academy, as they were starstruck by his relation to the kingdom’s legends of old they were fixated upon, and thus would talk with him excitedly and watch him train with apt attention. Dimitri was happy to see them acting less shy, but disliked how they treated him as a character in a storybook rather than a regular classmate, so he attempted to befriend them by inviting them to train with him, and was surprised and impressed by their knowledge of fighting techniques that nearly rivaled his own. Eventually their time spent together softened Percival’s expectations of him, and they became close friends.
Their relationship stayed mostly the same once 5 years had passed, though now Percival thinks back to their rather childish behavior around him with embarrassment, much to Dimitri’s amusement. Soon enough their relationship became romantic, but it wasn’t known by many others until after the war when they felt more comfortable showing affection and calling one another by pet names. Years after the war had ended they would have 3 children together: Francisco, Madeline, and Evangeline, who would go on to enroll at the Officer’s Academy just like their parents had.
“After his coronation, Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus with his loyal companion and head knight Percival by his side. The kingdom flourished under their joint rule, and although they were never officially married most likely because of their differing positions, the pair's relationship was no secret to those close to the throne. Little to no information remains on Percival after their eventual passing, aside from personal notes left by the late king admiring their wise advice and devotion to him and their position.”

Percival was instantly infatuated with Dorothea upon meeting her at the academy; it began as something innocent, simply being inspired by her talent in acting and singing as it was something they dreamed of doing one day despite their stagefright, then turned into a crush as they spent more time together. Dorothea was charmed by their awkwardness and eagerness to share their (rather bad) drafts for their musicals and stories they had written so she didn’t mind spending time with them.
But once the pair grew close and Percival learned of how exactly Dorothea had become a star at the opera, their respect for her changed from one of admiration for her talent to admiration for her resilience as an individual. When their relationship became romantic, the pair could hardly be separated, always spending time chatting vividly over tea or Percival trailing after her like a puppy.
“Percival wasted no time in asking for Dorothea’s hand in marriage once the war had finally ended, putting their fighting days behind them to fully support Dorothea’s return to the stage. With their wife’s guidance they discovered a talent as a playwright, and went on to write many critically-acclaimed plays that would stand the test of time. Though they are most known for their works adapting and breathing life into old knight’s tales that would otherwise be lost to time, it was noted that their personal favorite works were the ones written about and starring their beloved Dorothea, despite them not being favored by critics.”

His parent Percival is one of the only people Francisco can really connect with; his relationship to the rest of his family and others at the castle is strained by his struggles with social interaction and quick anger. However Percival understands his confusion with social cues and always speaks to him clearly and concisely, so he has no difficulty trusting their words. Percival cares for their son deeply but because of his vulnerabilities, poor fighting skills and their memories of him as a shy child who clung to them everywhere they went, they tend to coddle him despite his age, which embarrasses him quite often.

Though most would consider Madeline to be more similar to her father due to her interest in his political position and his tutoring her in horse riding and lance fighting, she also shares a lot with her parent Percival such as both of their inability to feel fear and love of the opera and arts. Madeline admires her parent’s accomplishments, particularly Percival’s job as the head knight, so much so that it inspires her to work hard to be like them, but also causes her to worry about not living up to their legacy. Percival often worries about her burning herself out but doesn’t know much of a way to help other than getting her to give herself a break by spending time together participating in their shared hobbies.

Percival has always worried over their youngest child due to her chronic illness and common bouts of sickness, but unlike most others they were completely supportive when Evangeline decided to reveal her secret pursuits in honing her magical talents, seeing a bit of themself in her with how they also taught themselves dark magic when they were younger. Evangeline was very grateful for their support, and they grew closer as Percival shared what knowledge they had with him.
