Faidlang Marlenned (ファイドラン゠マーレン, Faidoran Māren) is a Head Hunter employed by Nyzeir as the Captain of the West Expedition Team. Though she keeps a low profile, she has powerful connections around the Hunter Association including Ging, Ickshonpe, and Nyzeir. She is the best friend of Heran Cesnort and also the current mentor of Haven Strider. Her current goal is to become Chairman and reduce the amount of Pariston's supporters.

Faidlang is an average, lean woman whose most defining feature is her sharp silver eyes. She has short dark red hair with long bangs swept to the side. She wears a black collared blouse that reaches below her torso and an orange harness with gold rings which accents her style as well as accentuates her figure. Gold rings are also incorporated on her sleeve cuffs and ankle boots. Often, her shoulders are seen draped with a white Navy coat with, displaying a shoulder patch of the Hunter Association and three bands.

In the Succession Contest Arc, like her other West Dark Continent Expedition team members, she wears a matching ombre or gradient in their style: colorful pants, black ankle-strap heels, and a silk black button down with her white coat decorated with pins of her previous affiliations. While traveling in the colder areas of the Dark Continent, Faidlang adds a red fluff attachment to her coat.

Personality

Caption

Capable in both her career and leadership, Faidlang is a perfect choice to be the Captain of the West Dark Continent Expedition Team. She is firm in her decisions, but able to listen and understand the opinions of her colleages and team members. She has shown to be logical and decisive against her opponents physically and mentally. Initially during the Succession Contest Arc, the Temp Hunters and the Kakin Princes found her intimidating and cynical. Faidlang humbly mentioned her pride in the many occupations she took after becoming a hunter, holding much experience and quite a political influence over others despite her young age. According to the West Expedition Team members, she earns respect and loyalty because of her experience in the Hunter Association, the Kukan'yu Kingdom, and the Review Board. However, even more so, Faidlang both calm yet threatening, knowing the dangerous Nen ability that she wields and planning her strategic capabilities between people. As the teacher of Haven and the chosen leader of the West Expedition Team, Faidlang proves to have good leadership skills and coordination with her teammates, although, like most Manipulators, she also works accordingly by herself.

As stated by her comrades, she cares about the people around her and is not afraid to state it, despite not being outwardly affectionate. She keeps composed "like an older sister", being protective of her team's safety at all times or their general well-being. She has a good sense of humor and smiles often when she is proud of her colleagues. It is when people support Pariston, refuse to listen to her, or hurt the others for power, that she becomes volatile, argumentative, and fixated.

Background

After passing the Hunter Exam, Faidlang worked as a government Navy officer for the Kukan'yu Kingdom (20 years old). There she had met her closest friend, Heran, who she had learned was also a hunter, specifically an aspiring Poacher Hunter. Faidlang eventually worked her way up to a secretary for one of the princesses (7 years later). She mentioned jobs she took on as a Kukan'yu Navy officer, a bodyguard of a prince's son, and even had a private education in foreign affairs before becoming a highly respected official. As the Kukan'yu royalty hired more hunters, Faidlang was appointed a positon in the Review Board (to which she assumes was out of convenience) and furthered her career as a hunter. She met Heran again when she assigned her friend a job which led them to continue to keep closely in touch with each other.

She continued to work as a Review Board Commissioner for two years, observing the political environment of the Hunter Association. However, it became more apparent that the Review Board was heavily influenced by Pariston Hill. The Review Board slowly enlisted her more for unwelcoming tasks. Originally, Faidlang was offered to be a part of Pariston's Temp agency. Considering how closely it relates to her work such as her assistance to the Kukan'yu Kingdom's affairs, it fit well into her skillset and she liked the idea of coaching new hunters via the agency. Before agreeing, she researched into the job offers, only to find it more involved with researching poor claims towards Netero, his colleagues, and his supporters. Because she displayed a lack of participation, many of her colleagues severed connections with her. She even refused a job where she was hired to fake evidence of misconduct between Netero and a fellow Hunter associate, so that an uproar may damage Netero's reputation. Another time she refused, Faidlang was encouraged to spread propaganda that the 12th Chairman encouraged hunters to kill via the flawed Hunter Bylaws. She tried her best to avoid Pariston's followers as she grew her standing in the HUnter Association. After her Nen ability had become public in the Hunter Association, she would sometimes get paid to be used as an aura storage unit. The frequency of requesting her ability became worse when she denied enough jobs that intended to mess with Netero and his policies. Even though she avoided most of the job offers, it wasn't until the second time that her ability had been abused and killed another hunter that she was fired from the Review Board. Her reputation plummeted in the Hunter Association, but it rose attention from Anti-Pariston parties, one being Nyzeir Strider.

Faidlang's personal band

Cyber Society Band: Throughout the Succession Contest Arc and Dark Continent Arc, the entire West Expedition Team wears the band on some part of their body. Faidlang wears her's on her wrist. The meaning behind the insignia is revealed before the group travels to the Dark Continent with the main characters. When Kurapika asks about the insignia, Faidlang explains Haven's father's connection to Greed Island and the existence of the Cyber Society. Haven further clarifies that the band has a hierarchy with a unique Divine Script bind to it for each person which allows entrance to the Cyber Society and identifies the person's rank. She wears it constantly as a sign of loyalty and gratitude.

Faidlang's Nen Type: Manipulation
Type: Manipulation Forbidden Magic (聖女の救済, フォービデンマジック Saint's Salvation)
unavailable-image.jpg The user is able to transfer their aura at a steady rate to their targets. It can also increase the percentage potential of the target for any category, however, it can only increase one Nen type of the target by 5%, so the main aspect of the ability is to act as a storage unit of aura. Though, if not careful, the user may overexert the Nen potential and Nen capacity of the target which will age the target's body even after the user's aura is used up or is released.
  • The user must know their target's Nen type.
  • The target can use the user's aura while they are simultaneously giving aura.
  • The user must know the appropriate amount of aura to give or the target will face consequences.
  • Though the user can still use their own basic or advanced techniques while the Nen ability is used by someone else, she will only have half of the aura to spend.
  • The aura given can not be returned to the user.
Type: Manipulation Necrosis (危険な誘惑, ネクロシス Dangerous Seduction)
unavailable-image.jpg

As an offensive ability, the user can force their aura onto a single target at a time.

However, if it is without consent, the user can only force an initial amount of aura on the target. For every minute passed, the aura output the user can give will increase 5% of the initial output per second. To have the best effect, the user must force enough aura on the target to overreach the target's aura capacity. Should the user pass out from lack of aura, the ability will continue to force whatever aura the user replenishes onto the target.

Should the user's aura be used with the target's prior consent, the user is able to force more, if not all, their aura into a target until the target's body can no longer hold it. The target will subsequently have physical repercussions of significant aging and bodily deterioration.

  • The effects can be reversed with a Nen exorcist.
  • Using Zetsu will stop the process, however, it is still disadvantageous.
  • Any aura given can not be returned to the user.
Type: Manipulation Senescence (人生の後半, センセンス The Last Half of Life)
unavailable-image.jpg

The user can keep the Nen nodes closed after the death of a target to avoid post-mortem Nen.

Type: Manipulation Aura Identification*
unavailable-image.jpg After the user's target receives their aura, the user is now able to recognize the identity of a person by their aura. The user may also store another target's aura separately and use it to mask their aura or another target's aura. However, it is incapable of copying the target's Nen abilities.

Quotes

[]

  • (To Temp Hunters) "I have no doubt you're all capable hunters. Once you hone your skills, your willpower, your goals... you could turn hell into heaven if you desire. That is the expectation of us. Even so, this is not a matter of being a hunter, but how you handle being the hunted. You can never fight hunger and we are their food."
  • (To Haven) "I can only tell you that I care for you and advise you to not do things I deem, from my perspective and experience, you can not handle. Prove yourself and face your consequences as you see fit. We are by your side to assist, but do not expect it and plan accordingly."
  • (To Kurapika) "There is no joy in rising to power, only for those who don't understand the weight of their responsibilities and the devastating consequences of falling to despair."

Author's Notes

  • She was made to differ completely from Beyond Netero in terms of appearance, race, clothing, personality, etc.
  • Despite how intense and alluring she looks, Faidlang was not made to step on me...maybe.
  • I think I made all of the West Expedition Team members in 2018-2019.
