Haven Strider (ヘイブン゠ストライダー, Heibun Sutoraidā) is a Rookie Exploration Hunter and the daughter of Nyzeir Strider and Aida Censhia. She is introduced as a member of Ging's West Expedition Team before the 4th banquet on the Black Whale.

She initially begins her debut amidst the Succession Contest Arc as an observer to Kurapika. However, as she gradually involves herself with the main characters, her role becomes more relevant. During the Cyber Society Arc (a spinoff arc), Haven takes the role of the main protagonist.

Haven dresses regularly in efficient and sporty, fitted-outfits. She has light blue hair that ties into a low bun and a side-ponytail on her right─one of her distinguishing features. She variates the hairstyle by tying the bun higher, to the back of her head, or adding braids around it. Like her wavy bangs, Haven's hair gradually becomes wavier as she ages. She also has dark purple eyes that each have a light around the pupil (a design choice for fun). Being unable to draw natural strength as a Specialist, her figure stays petite, only developing lean muscles. Though Haven reveals she would prefer to develop the physical capabilities of an Enhancer, she is satisfied with her Nen type and works around the limitations.

During the 4th banquet of the Succession Contest arc, she is seen with an ombre halter top and black high-waisted straight pants with gold trims. When she leaves for the Dark Continent, Haven appears to wear a sleeveless sweater with a loose turtleneck. With her top tucked, she wears rolled dark-purple shorts over black stirrup socks. Her shoes are purple wedge-heeled tennis shoes, secured by crossed, wide elastic bands. Frequently, she also dresses her arms in black fingerless gloves, ringed only at the middle finger. On rare occasions, such as meditating or training, she only wears a tucked, neck mesh undershirt a top.

When she returns to her home, a few family pictures show that Haven also keeps her hair tied to her right as a toddler. Even then, she wore casual, sporty clothes for every season.

Haven after finding a cave opening

Originally, Haven appears to be naive and reckless―a reasonable assumption. Due to her sudden intrusion and introduction with Tserriednich, the characters that know of his sociopathic behaviors are initially unsettled by Haven's feigned ignorance. (Something about how she vaguely mentions her the future in relation to the theme: facing the past) However, Haven strategically works with the West Expedition team and the Kakin bodyguards to outplay Tserriednich. She can collaborate decisively with allies in conditions where she needs their strengths or they need her capabilities. Even so, compared to Gon, it takes time for the main characters to become friendly with her, gradually revealing more about herself to assure them.

Foremost, Haven is a witty, ambitious, yet warmhearted girl. Contrasting to the main characters, her serene demeanor regularly stays consistent throughout the story. Although she engages in pranks and sarcasm, she is sensible to herself and her friends, being able to speak her mind and compromise when in disagreement. Her feminity is well-balanced with her tenacious fortitude in circumstances she is expected to keel. She has a sophisticated persona without arrogance and is unwavering to every person she meets even if she is aware they are rude, overbearing, or threatening. She accepts acknowledgments and criticisms from others as well as from herself. Often, she can handle difficult interactions with savvy and calm responses. Rather politely, Haven is very curious and will often respond to situations by asking thought-provoking questions ranging from playful and rhetorical to invasive and uncomfortable. Acknowledging the underestimation of her age, she is not beyond using psychological manipulation to disarm and obtain further information from others in order to satisfy herself and her affiliates.

As the story progresses, she reveals whimsical interests in drawing anatomy diagrams, examining rotting organisms, and enjoying sweets like vanilla Locky to Alluka and the main characters. Unlike the majority backgrounds of the characters, having both strong parents, her upbringing actively avoided internalized fears and developed sustainable habits. As Pono describes, Haven "flourished in an unimaginably caring home" to be able to balance her mature attitude and still have youthful spirit. She desires to discover the world and experience the unknown obsessively to an impressive degree, arguably alluring. Though she is not placed in positions of leadership like her father, her friends are charmed by her tactful display of patience and understanding. She is not above asking for help, aware that her weaknesses as a Specialist, as a girl, and as a single person require the support of her companions.

While Haven and Alluka both share about their families, Haven describes the foundation of her strong mentality: her father is highly skilled in interpersonal connections and her mother is unshakeable in internal conflicts―traits that were taught and passed on to Haven. She is often compared to them for these qualities but is distinctive for her persistent composure to complex decisions. Disclosed, Haven observes the behaviors of environment and incorporates a fundamental insight of it to react. Where Gon frequently leads with his heart, and Killua with his level-head, Haven accounts for both towards resolution, often temporarily detaching herself as a third-party perspective. Representative of her Nen ability, Haven has both an emotional and investigative fascination with people, especially to the main characters. She admires and aids Gon, Kurapika, Leorio, Killua, and Alluka while considering her own shortcomings.

Haven meeting Tserriednich

...[needs work]The main characters each develop her experience as a person and a hunter. While confronting Tserriednich, Haven's and Kurapika's thoughts were connected telepathically, questioning how people can change from hardship and eventually finding solace for Kurapika. He and Haven withdraw from Tserriednich's tragedy, and while recovering, Kurapika slowly and carefully returns to his curious nature with Leorio's support. Eventually, he is comfortable having intellectual conversations with Haven. With Leorio, she commends his honest care for his friends and the sincerity he displays even in difficult times. They continue to bond through meditation and the relation of their Nen abilities. When Alluka becomes her best friend, Haven guides Alluka to have confidence in herself despite her family's influences and to provide healthy methods to pursue her interests. Her determination and inspiration is furthered when Killua reveals his journey from his horrific past to Haven and helps him find the disconnect between his behavior and his head. When they become closer, he describes his deep feelings and experience with Gon, to which she consoles him. She respects the siblings profoundly for their desire to change for the better even when it is challenged.

Haven's breaking point reaches when her credibility as a hunter is called into question with the probability of ending her career in the Hunter Association. Though she and her father reveal the anonymous anti-hunter group, the rumors about her background and her friends spread across the Cyberspace. Their campaign using FR-codes fails to help Haven even after the rumors about her friends dissolve. They support her through the public humiliation until she can track the culprit. She rebuilds herself and her reputation by providing information and financial support to her friends, favorably noticed when she helps Leorio build a hospital.

While the main characters rely on gambling and haggling for fast money, Haven is better-informed in longer investments using information, assets, and properties―methods applied by other Hunters. She uses this to assure Leorio's hospital has a steady income for the future. When Killua loses around one million jenny to dolphish racing, Haven considers selling his pictures as punishment.

Background

A year before Gon was born, Nyzeir Strider and Aida Censhia gave birth to Haven's brother, Kunir. Nyzeir imagined a paradise for their growing family, initially reviewing the places he traveled through his career. Though Aida argued her preference for small living, both of their ideas were put to a halt. Aida began to notice Kunir moved slowly and would be easily startled, compared to his eager and affectionate behavior previously. It quickly became apparent that Kunir was ill and was immediately taken to a trusted medical advisor after Nyzeir caught Kunir's muscles seizing. Under careful examination, Kunir's blood displayed a lack of Hex-A. The infant's nerves and body systems would slowly deteriorate into an early death.

They were heart-broken. Nyzeir could only accept the recommended medications to slow the disease while he watches his son's inevitable death. They were now concerned for their expected child, Haven. Aida tested for possible diseases that Haven would inherit, discovering Haven was also at risk. Hoping to never endure Kunir's fate again, Nyzeir and Aida sought reliable options to keep Haven and guarantee her a healthy life. The two agreed to genetically modify Haven's genes, a reliable yet highly condemned practice. Not only was her health granted, her parents granted the doctors to heighten her immune system, stamina, and memory. The byproduct was that Haven's hair and irises would be a different color from her parents, and they adored her nevertheless.

Their family moved to a large house in a beautiful home rule-class town of Vedor, a city in Zermeni Northwest, away from public knowledge. Despite his deterioration, Kunir was affectionate and playful to Haven for as long as he could before passing away. Haven has little recollection of her brother from that point, yet she still has nostalgic moments every so often. Her upbringing as the daughter of a successful hunter helped their family keep financially stable and further the opportunities she had as a child. Her father gave her a wonderful homeschooled education along with her mother's healthy physical training. Even when her parents inevitably disagreed, they had healthy boundaries and were understanding to each other.

By the time Haven reached four years of age, she was exceedingly active and invested in the natural environment. Initially, her mother and father expected to train and educate Haven to a substantial level. However, after recognizing the adventure and fulfillment her father found as a hunter, she furthered her interest in becoming one. Her parents were hesitant but understood the freedom and support it allowed them, and they would continue to teach and train her physical and mental capabilities until she was eight years old, to which she began training for the Hunter Exam.

After she passed the 286th Hunter Exam at ten years old, her father continued her training and began teaching her Nen. For two years, she spent mastering the basic and advanced techniques, and for another year, to research Nen abilities and finalize her Hatsu. Before the expected year of the 289th Hunter Exam, Nyzeir and Ging formed the West Expedition Team with their trusted colleagues to which Haven accompanied and advanced her Nen ability while contending with Dark Continent creatures. They arrived at the Kakin Empire a week before the Black Whale departed to the new continent. Haven would later reveal that her father was conflicted with her going to the Dark Continent, but put faith into the team and in Haven.

Equipment

Barrel Bag: When Haven is traveling, she brings a large teal green barrel bag that is strapped across her back and is used to store first-aid, air-filtering masks, sanitary gloves, layering clothes, a small sewing kit, tape, scissors, matches, water bottles, hair-ties, snacks, a small mat, a whole blanket, and a large drawing tablet for sketches. It has several pockets on the inside of the bag, evincing itself as quite useful. Often, she offers candies to Alluka and Killua from her back.

Digital Tablet: In the Dark Continent, Haven drew on a digital tablet for notes and anatomy sketches of the creatures that she observed through her Nen ability. She has extra tablets that she gave to Rolden to store, each with its own set of two multi-pens.

Cyber Society Band: Throughout the Succession Contest Arc and Dark Continent Arc, the entire West Expedition Team wears the band on some part of their body. However, Haven stores her band in her bag. The meaning behind the insignia is revealed before the group travels to the Dark Continent with the main characters. When Kurapika asks about the insignia, Faidlang explains Haven's father's connection to Greed Island and the existence of the Cyber Society. Haven further clarifies that the band has a hierarchy with a unique Divine Script bind to it for each person which allows entrance to the Cyber Society and identifies the person's rank.

Magnifier Shield: ...Like Killua's yo-yos, the shield is extremely durable and heavy, weighing 750 kilograms. It has a total diameter of 165 millimeters and a maximum width of 45 millimeters. The convex lens itself is made of a glass polycarbonate that weighs 275 kilograms alone, 125 millimeters in diameter, and 25 millimeters in width. It is concealed by an iris diaphragm with additional padding between the mechanism and the lens.

Abilities & Powers

Haven has all the benefits granted by her status as a Hunter. She has been trained by both of her parents at a young age to be a top hunter in dexterity and her occupation. As the daughter of an information hunter (father), who is a colleague to Ging, and a former MMA champion (mother), she has an enormous experience and wealth shared and provided by them before she first earned the Dark Continent exploration commission from the Kukan'yu leader. This is apparent from the amount of drawing tablets she could afford. Since Nyzeir is also well-known, he has many connections that placed Haven's networking and career in the lead of most hunters. She has a myriad of opportunities, one especially being the exploration of the Dark Continent. Like the main characters, her judgment, coordination, and charisma are recognized during her hunter exam, being able to catch the attention of a few examiners such as Morel. Haven is not one to kill from her training but has been capable of torturing her opponents via breaking or crushing their limbs to defeat or gain information from them. Though her potential is not as noticeable as the many skilled hunters in the West Expedition Team, Pono remarks that she progresses and learns fairly quickly, and compensates using creative tactics with her superior aura capacity in combat.

Maintaining the regimen her parents gave, Haven trained eight hours each day, developing and adding to the disciplines every few years in successive order of flexibility and endurance when she was four, mixed martial arts and practical combat with stamina training when she was five, strategizing and preparing for the Hunter Exam when she was eight, and learning Nen after passing the exam at ten years old. As Haven states from her genetic modification, she can remember every face to photographic detail and every action that was made for all the battles she observed or participated in, stay alert for weeks without needing sleep, and never once been ill. Her extraordinary observance and rationality keep her adaptable for intuitive or conventional strategies in combat whether or not she is accompanied.

Weaknesses: Haven acknowledges that her skills are better suited for single targets when confronted and would not do well when dealing with multiple opponents. She has been able to capture multiple Dark Continent animals at once, however, a few skilled Nen-users can disarm Haven if she does not have a planned strategy. When she is met with two anti-hunters by herself, she only manages to isolate and attack each person before applying her Nen ability. She is regularly supported by one or two comrades to avoid needless confrontation. On multiple incidents, she could not sense others without En and has relied on the better preternatural perceptions of her friends. Although she has a general idea of how weapons are used, she is comically inept at using any, even protesting using a knife when Killua chucked one to her before she promptly tossed it away.

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Haven is remarkably swift with the means to maintain the pace of the West Expedition Team when they were pursuing a flying four-scale-clover koi. She displayed that she can reach Killua's top speed, granted that he is not using Godspeed, without breaking sweat. Even though Haven and Killua had minimal practice to develop their teamwork, she quickly discerned when he would use his Lightning Palm without needing to signal her. She is also an avid climber, scaling approximately 3,000 meters of a full-grown World Tree within half a day. She was able to react immediately to oncoming blows from Razor and dart to positions best suited to stall his movement.

Enhanced Agility: Haven can maneuver rapidly into a position where she can break the limbs, crush muscles, or control the body of her opponent effectively. Because of her mother, Haven is trained and versed to memorize positions that allow her to immobilize her opponents. During her spar with Killua, she was able to grab his fist and control his arm before he instantly dislocated his limb to escape the armlock. When she spars with Razor, Haven leaped to his arm to trap it from behind, though his superior strength eventually released him from her grasp.

Immense Stamina: While lost in a cavern, Haven was able to stay alert and form En for a week, even stating she could hide it with In for the same amount of time. To improve Killua's En, she even suggests to him to try using Ren in his sleep as it was one of her training routines with her father. Together with her developed Ren, her additional prior training with the time she spent with the West Expedition Team trained her to conserve her energy and increase her aura capacity.

Genius-Level Intellect and Memory: Haven has a vast amount of knowledge as part of her preparation for the Hunter Exam as well as her education to earn and exceed her learning certificate. Her genetically enhanced memory has allowed her to remember a variety of subjects, including mathematics, Kakin history, video games, business tactics, minor hacking, and even a few classified topics. She demonstrated photographic memory to the point of being able to realistically draw several Guardian Spirit Beasts and maps of rooms, needing "only one good survey" of the intended image. To reinforce her analytical abilities, her memory is also used to derive the experience of others, especially for combat. After her spar with Killua, she repeated every action to Mocoro so that she could use alternative techniques to lead to a submission. On the Black Whale, she managed to negotiate with Kurapika to allow her a few days to investigate Tserriednich's bodyguards when tasked to locate the remaining Kurta Eyes by Mizaistom, alternatively finding Pariston's moles as a priority and offering surveillance of the lower tiers to reassure him. Haven's natural defenseless impression helps to conceal her methodical thought process which keeps her calm and in control of other's cooperation and her own mental state, being able to purposefully and quickly force mental fatigue on Fourth Prince Tserriednich, First Queen Unma, and anti-hunter Somatonia.

Master Strategist: Haven uses her extraordinary memory to recall techniques and quickly adapt it to her combat tactics, making her versatile during a battle. She has skills in exploiting information schemes that saved the reputations of her friends via FR-codes and capture an anti-hunter. Being unable to use gambling, the main characters relied on Haven to financially advise and support their goals.

Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Haven was taught by her mother who was a former MMA champion of the Begerossé Union. She began her steady training when she was five and continued to spar with her parents after passing the Hunter Exam. With Aida's experience and instructions, Haven exhibits expertise in forms of Judo, Jiu-jitsu, and boxing. Her melee abilities were furthered by the introduction of Nen by her father where he gave his own experience and knowledge of Nen users, including those of the Hunter Association and students of Shingen-ryu. While Killua uses Flowing Dance against Haven to counter her Ryu, she offset his technique with a feinted block before grabbing his arm into an instant lock. Though she could not significantly damage the talented hunter, Killua was frustrated that he was unable to reach many of her weak spots nor find a consistent pattern to her combinations, with the condition that they would not be using their Nen abilities. Not only is Haven capable of wielding, multiple Nen techniques to anticipate and protect herself from an opponent's attack, but she is also inhumanly skilled at remembering the fighting style of other battles she observed to instantly variate it to her martial arts while in close proximity to the opponent. With several mentors, Haven has a constant flow of fighting styles to reference, mentioning her parents, the West Expedition Team, and the Greed Island Masters. She can dodge and escape the attacks of opponents more senior than her, despite her preference to close combat. Her ability to recall all combinations and setups makes her an adaptable martial artist, being able to kick, punch, grab, and dodge her adversaries seamlessly and equally into the fight.

NVC Expert: After observing and testing her Nen ability with the West Expedition Team, Haven can immediately recognize and note human behavioral patterns without it. When Tserriednich lied about luring and murdering women, she indicated his expression was exaggerated and his body shifted away from her, whereas a truthful person would be concise and confrontational. When Killua recollects how he and Gon closed their eyes to avoid suspicion, Haven explains how his gesture can reveal dishonesty, especially with Pakunoda's ability. Her skill and interest in NVC could be from her own father's mastery of it.

Immense Zoological Knowledge: From her childhood to the present, Haven has received multiple, thorough sources about plants and animals including her education, personal research, cyberspace surfing, Nen ability, and the Dark Continent. She states humbly to Tserriednich as only owning the entire editions of 11 different biologists, earning a contrary compliment from France, a fellow hunter. When Alluka asks, Haven is able to recall various magical and non-magical plants or animals, though teased by Killua as a nerd (生物オタク).

Nen

Being a Specialist, Haven utilizes her aura differently than the other five Nen types. As she explains to Killua, most specialists are known to utilize a weapon to protect themselves, whereas, Haven employs hand-to-hand martial combat in order to activate her Nen ability. As a result, veterans that rely on the patterns of their opponents are unable to accurately infer Haven's Nen type without prior knowledge. Thanks to her father's extensive training, Haven mastered the basic and advanced Nen techniques diligently and consistently over the course of two years. After meditating for long periods of time for a week, she was able to control her aura nodes rapidly, being able to perform Ten in a little more than a week after. Compared to how Wing guided his students, from the start of Haven's initiation, her father demonstrated which basic techniques would lead to certain advanced techniques and how to implement them into her fighting style. For two weeks, she practiced Zetsu, and three weeks to practice Ren, before complete mastery and speed. However, her father did not give her the Water Divination test until after mastering the advanced techniques, training her in the case that her Nen ability would need an application of them. Along with mastering En after, Haven continued training with Ren for two months until she could use it in her sleep. This rigorous training would help develop her En's area-reach, reduce the fluctuations, and prepare her for other Ren-based abilities such as Gyo, Ken, and Ryu. She spent another week or more to master Shu, and learned Ken soon after, including her training against Nen-users of Flowing Dance. When Haven was not training, Nyzeir encouraged her to ask him questions and research more about Nen with her license. For that reason, Haven has knowledge and research of Ibokuri after further explanation and an unsuccessful practice, resulting in comedic bonding with her father.

Haven developed an ability called Nexus File with a definitive instance during her week of training Shu when she practiced with spring grass. The imagery of the grasses' organelles, cells, and components flooded her mind suddenly, but her inquiry lost her focus. Prior to that moment, she had read countless detailed books, articles, and videos about molecular components of organic life, even dreaming about the images of animal cells moving as it would be seen under a microscope. As Haven compares her obsession, it was "thinking about how each part of an organism to build the whole" as if it were "individual colors from a painting that made it captivating the more it's observed". When she was almost thirteen, finishing her necessary training, she went through the Water Divination test. The hue of her leaf changed, the chlorophyll altered as if it were Autumn, revealing her affinity to nature and as a Specialist. Immediately, Haven began to train herself with plants around her home, recreating the imagery of plant cells in her head with the information being unique to each plant she touched, eventually practicing on her pet and her parents. Her parents and the West Expedition Team would further her combat training and implementing it to her Nen ability. As she develops as a Nen-user, her ability is well-valued for the information she collected of the Dark Continent creatures.

Time and again, Haven proves she is both resourceful and efficient with her aura whenever she encounters a challenger. Because of the simplicity and inexpensiveness of her Nen ability, she is able to use advanced techniques with her ability activated if she does not use it on too many people. For one instance, she used In to hide her Nen ability to which Tserriednich and his Nen beast were completely unaware. Haven is also exceptionally capable of utilizing only Nen techniques against her opponent, even using their knowledge of Flowing Dance against them. Instead, she uses Ryu to feint punches or kicks before hooking her target's limbs. In her spar with Killua, without using their Nen abilities, Mocoro observed her En could reach 10m with fluctuations of 3 or 4 meters (approx. 10-13′), using it to anticipate being struck in certain vulnerable areas when he dodged into her blind-spots. She is highly adept with Ren, trained to be able to sleep while it is active at a minimum. When Knuckle assesses the West Expedition Team, he estimates Haven to have a total aura capacity of about 19,500.

Weaknesses: Haven avoids revealing her Nen type as she lacks the strength and recuperative abilities that Enhancers are endowed with. Because of this, she can not add force or cause much damage using advanced techniques like Ko. When she was injured by a group of carnivorous mice, it took her longer to heal than that of Gon's recovery time. Her superior, Faidlang, is regularly by her side or requiring the team members to monitor Haven due to this. Because her Nen type is farther from Transmutation, being only 60% as capable, she has difficulty forming her aura into characters and numbers. While trapped in a cavern with a gigantic aura-stealing spider, she resorted to tracing on Killua's hand with her finger to communicate. Since her ability is used repeatedly, her aura depletes the more she uses it on separate targets, though this does improve her aura capacity over time.

Type: Specialization Nexus File (ミクロの決死圏, ネクサスファイル Micro Dead Zone)
26623282_zgLqM2HJyMYSo2T.png By touching a living target for five seconds, Haven can learn every physique about them in real-time. Haven must first cover the target in Shu before activating the ability in order for the Hatsu to interpret the information. To assure her ability is activated, she must abide by the following limitations:
  • To obtain more information, Haven must focus her aura on the specific area of the target. However, this will become harder for Haven to monitor the target.
  • Though the range of her ability is limitless, she can not identify the location of her target with the ability.
  • She can only use this ability on fifteen people at most with the information less detailed as she uses more aura.
  • Haven is at risk if the target is naturally hazardous to touch.
  • She can not use her ability on herself since it will have no effect.
  • In order for the target to be considered living, it must be able to gain nutrition, respire, respond to stimuli, excrete, grow, reproduce, and sense things around them.
  • Nen creatures, beast or parasitic, will have no effect.

Quotes

[]

  • (To Mizaistom) "Tserriednich invited me, did he not? Don't worry. This is nothing more than a favor of retrieval. It is necessary for hunters to complete tasks without fail, no matter how impossible it may seem, right?"
  • (To Theta) "I hope you become the hunter you wanted to be."
  • (To Kurapika) "I'm sure you've been living this way as if it were your whole life...that no one in the world could understand. Yet, as a hunter to another, I still want you to keep reaching out for the things you like. Have you asked yourself if there was anything more you wanted fulfill as a hunter? You've done so much as blacklist hunter, but you kept cutting into yourself with that double-edged sword without any fear. After a week, maybe just days, I'm afraid... you might not get a chance to be the hunter you wanted to become! Really... I wish we were in a more appropriate situation because you need time for yourself more than ever."
  • (To Alluka) "Would you do that to me? ...I'm not afraid, because you wouldn't hurt me for something you like. I accept you, Alluka. I trust you because we wanted to be together. That is enough for me."
  • (To Leorio) "You know, you and I are the same. We are just beginning our journey as hunters. There is no need to criticize ourselves now. Let's root for each other!"
  • (To Killua) "It did not matter who won. You already knew what I wanted."
  • (To Killua) "Go at your own pace, Killua. You're an awesome hunter already."
  • "Killua... I fail to think of anyone else as inspiring like you. You are so colorfully vivid that I can't stop staring. Yet, somehow, I know the color of you will become even more amazing through every struggle..."

Other quotes:

  • (To Kurapika) "Why did you become a hunter? ...Was it your passion to become a blacklist hunter alone? Or would you rather like a taste of adventure again? Decide for your true self!"
  • (To Kurapika) "Do you remember what D. Hunter signed at the end of his book? 'To be a hunter is freedom.' What does freedom mean to you?"
  • (To Killua) "You're an ex-Zoldyck assassin, right? ...Did you ever like it? Killing people?"
  • (To Leorio) "Hunters are not meant to be egomaniacs. Even though the exam weeds out people, it is a community nonetheless. Following the bylaws or receiving stars doesn't make you a top hunter. Being able to build connections and show what you're made of is how you become one."
  • (To Alluka) "I know you're upset, but you also know that wasn't the best way to deal with your brother. You know he cares for you more than your family has ever. Explain to him what you want him to understand and he will. Next time, you won't ever need to be mean."
  • (To Killua) "Do you know much is a life worth?"
  • (To Killua) "I think you shouldn't expect the impossible from yourself when the both of you were doing what was best. If you went down in flames with Gon, where do you think Alluka would be?"
  • (To Killua) "My intuition might not be as great as yours, but I know that you and Gon will learn to grow together again."

  • Bean notes Haven is the only one to request the completion of her Hunter Exam to be removed from public knowledge, even from the chairman, Netero, as she did not want to be recruited yet before she finished her training.

Intertextuality and References

  • A major source of inspiration for Haven's ability is from Binolt's ability, "Scissor Hands" and Pakunoda's ability, psychometry. Both of the characters are canonically specialists.
  • The name of Haven's Nen ability, Nexus File, is a type of format used for bioinformatics such as genetic codes and molecular characters.
  • Micro Dead Zone is the english translation of ミクロの決死圏 in which is the japanese name for the movie, Fantastic Voyage. It is notable that the movie follows a Sci-fi adventure where a submarine crew is shrunk to save a scientist from a blood clot in his brain.
  • In recent years, CRISPR technology has allowed humans to change their genetic composition which greatly inspires Haven's past.
  • Botan, a character from YuYu Hakusho, is similar to Haven:
    • both have blue hairstyles which are tied up.
    • both have purple eyes.
    • both are realistic yet mischievous.
    • both do not mind being around the opposite gender.
    • both act as guides: for Haven, the Dark Continent, and Botan, the Dark Tournament.

Notes

Author's Notes

  • Haven was created Summer of 2015.

Haven's previous concept before October 2021
  • I'm not sure what her last name was before, but I know her first name was "Sayuri". I changed her name at some point in 2016.
    • Haven's Romaji name was changed from "Hebun" to "Hēbun" to "Heibun" and the Kana from "ヘブン" to "ヘーブン" to "ヘイブン" in 2020.
  • I think she had a sleeveless hoodie for her first design, maybe a hair clip too. I know she didn't have a side-bun, but still had the side-ponytail.
  • In a previous draft, Haven's name was meant to be a reference to the sanctuary that she would reside in the Dark Continent, and we don't ever go back to that time again.
  • In another previous draft, even existing on Amino Apps, Haven's Nen ability was named "Scientist's Memoir: Myriad Encyclopedia". The name was traded to reference a movie that would be more fitting and match the usage of references for a Hatsu in Hunter X Hunter. I changed this around August 2020.
  • Haven and Gon meet after the Cyber Society Arc. Their first meeting is best described as "the cousin you heard about just recently".
  • Haven's humor includes teasing Killua and teasing Killua with Alluka. Examples include:

Haven and Alluka napping together
    • Placing his Beatle-07 in an overturned glass filled with water. (Don't worry. She knows it's water proof.)
    • Commenting on the size of his "En".
    • Asking hypothetical and psychological questions for his reactions.
    • Ignoring his insults and under-playing it or responding sarcastically.
    • Teasing how he can't remember names or all the people he meets (despite noting his incredible intuition).
  • I love Alluka and Haven's interactions. I want a proper and profound connection between girls in the shounen genre even if it is a genre mainly tailored to boys. If I could, I would make girls more relatable to boys through their own real struggles without compromising their femininity.
  • Haven just loves platonically in a subtle and unconditional way. I think romance-subplots are amazing, I just like focusing on themes and action.
  • I draw this girl way too much, but she is my go-to.
  • One time, when I was learning about developing characters in 2015-2016, I panicked that Haven didn't have a proper purpose or personality. I was devastated that I had created something with no meaning, like a fake love. I'm sort of glad I had that reaction to jumpstart. I would like to think she is a more compelling character now.
  • I always thought it was weird that aura colors is never really mentioned in the wiki. I guess if you put visuals or screenshots it is supposed to be enough (unless you're color blind). I think it should considering the official manga colors with Nen differs from the anime. I think even Killua's lightning is purple in the manga!
    • Haven's aura is lavender purple for the 2011 anime adaptation and light blue for the manga.
