The Artificer used to be like her descendant in that she could and would tell you exactly what she was thinking. However, events later in her life completely squashed that, namely being sent to the empress and used as a prize to make the favorite geneticist comply. Any wrong word could mean death, especially since the empress wasn't fond of mutant like her.

She was later sent to the geneticist and given more agency, like a title and an actual profession she could be in, but she knew she wasn't free. The empress could slay her without a second thought. Still, that never meant she'd bend to anyone's will. Experiments would escape every once in a while; sometimes when keys were "accidentally" left nearby, sometimes when The Artificer just so happened to be looking away. If she never looked concerned at their disappearance, it was just because she had a resting bitch face.
