BACKSTORY

Wren's parents divorced when he was quite young, and he ended up staying with his mother. His parents didn't really keep in contact, so he didn't really see his father much. He learnt to be a independent at a young age as his mother was a cruise ship worker and was often away.
It also left him a lot of time to be alone and test out his powers, which first manifested when he was nine years old. At first, he could generate small balls of black energy which looked cool but didn't really do much other than just float around. He never told anyone, not his mother or any of his friends, feeling like it was something he should keep private. As he grew older, so that his ability to do things. He could soon control the energy more finely and make it have different forms. He used it to help him remove a tree that had fallen across his driveway during a night storm. His neighbour wondered how the tree had been moved, but didn't question it.
After school one day, he caught sight of three male students seemingly teasing a female student. The female student seemed mad and caused the one of the male students to get pushed back into a shed without her touching him. In the confusion, Wren grabbed the female student and pulled her away to avoid causing more of a commotion. It was then that he officially met Danica, someone else with unique powers like him, and they soon became fast friends. They found they had a lot in common, other than having powers. They hung out a lot and would often help each other practise with their powers, like sparring each other. They agreed to keep it a secret between them.
One day when they were around twelve, they were hanging out at Wren's house in the evening when a group of soldier-looking people broke in. A fight broke out but Danica and Wren were quickly taken down and sedated, being taken to some unknown facility where they would spend most of the rest of their teenage years. There were were made to demonstrate their abilities and undergo various tests. Sometimes testing out a drug, or undergoing a procedure. For the next years, Wren was stuck in the lab, doing whatever task or test the scientists wanted him to do. Over time, he learnt to cover his whole body and turn into different creatures. The scientists seemed very interested in this and its military application. There were other lab subjects like her too, but they weren't really allowed to interact much.
When they were 19, there was a sudden riot amongst the experimentees and an explosion allowed many of them to escape from the facility, including Danica and Wren. They returned home to find their parents, but found out that their parents had actually agreed to let them be taken and were paid off by the institution with a lot of money for their co-operation and discretion. Obviously, their home was no longer what they thought it was and they couldn't return there. So instead, they travelled together to try to find somewhere to settle. However, Wren was unable to handle the spontaneity and harshness of the outside world and chose to return to the facility voluntarily for its routine and familiarity, which Danica was strongly against, trying to stop him. He was eventually inducted as a formal operative of the institution, specialising in re-capturing, or even assassinating, escaped experimentees and ex-operatives. He still meets Danica sometimes when the two factions clash and never really seems to genuinely want to kill her.
