The planet Iduna
The planet is referred to as Iduna by the locals and Gliese B by the official star charts.
Iduna is larger than Earth, with a higher average temperature and composition of water. It had no higher lifeforms by the time humans arrived, with a natural disaster some 100 million years ago seemingly having killed off all its primitive multicellular life. The high sea levels and current location of tectonic plates have made it so that most of the dry land on the planet take on the form of numerous islands and archipelagos, with the largest intact land masses being about the size of the Arabian peninsula.
The planet is undergoing terraforming initiatives through the introduction of new lifeforms and alterations of the atmosphere in ways which would lower the average temperatures, thus trapping water into glacial ice, lowering the sea-levels and exposing new dry land. This is referred to as the “Global Climate Diversification Initiative” (or the GCD Initiative).
The idunians put little value on the preservation of pre-existing species and ecosystems. In their minds the planet belongs to its people and the people are free to do with it whatever they please, turning the planet into a global garden. As barely anything lived there before humans came along, then human meddling is largely seen as an improvement and the island-rich environment enables for hundreds of ecosystems to be contained. Animals and plants have been introduced for food and recreation. Idunians are widely renowned for their genetic engineering, occasionally developing brand new "artisan species" by splicing existing ones - such as making a “breed” that uses a wild but aesthetically pleasing xeno-animal as a base, but giving it the temperament and bladder control of a dog, for example.

Appearance
Yis is a short woman. Even though she's quite fit Yis's proportions make her look on the stocky side rather than lithe. Her features do not quite match any current-era ethnic group, but do have a sort of international aunt-ish roundness about them with a small snub-nose standing in the middle of her face as a centerpiece.. Her skin is of a light brown color year-round and the good doctor sports shoulder-length gingerbrown hair, along with teal eyes that have been heavily modified
As is common within the idunian society she sports a number of modifications setting her apart from a default earth-human. Most of them are not particularily visible, taking on the form of changes to the lungs, heart and circulatory system. Those give her a greater resistance to changes of pressure without suffering from tissue damage or "the bends", as well as increase her capacity to hold her breath, slowing down her metabolism significantly when submerged underwater. The most clearly visible change is the translucent nictitating membrane (i.e. third eyelid), which she slides on to protect her eyes from dust or salt water. Yis also tends to switch to it when she's heavily concentrating on an observation, to the point when one wouldn't dare blink in fear of missing something, or when her eyes are overly tired. In the latter case, whilst fighting sleep, her third eyelid might even become visible outside of blinking, partially covering the eye as is the case with some cats.
Gear
On field missions Yis tends to take along a mechanical assistant whom she sometimes affectionately refers to as her "companion cube", or by whatever name the manufacturers have bestowed the assistants' AI. The current fashion in such machines is to keep them small and lightweight, in the shape of a cube about a foot across from which various extensions could protrude upon orders enabling the machine to move, commit tasks, carry, lift, take samples and defend itself. The mechanical assistant also has a holographic "human interface", but Yis rarely uses those.
The "mechanical assistan" isn't the only bit of gear she tends to carry around, but is the most prevalent next to her bracelet-like wrist computer.

Backstory
-Early life is WIP, but she was interested in animals
Yis was a smart kid, but struggled with an addiction to virtual reality simulations throughout her puberty, which affected her health and grades. When Yis was 15 she got into a fight with her parents and moved out, initially living with a much older online friend. Once on her own the girl quickly began spending her every waking moment in the simulations, getting minimal sleep and food in the process. Its' not that Yis was lazy, but she put all of her inquiring energy into videogames and virtual reality simulations, as by that time the "real world" had lost all meaning when compared to make-belief. Her family realised that she'd gone off the edge and interfered after tracking her down, with Yis's sister convincing her to come live with her and her mother getting her a therapist.
The push to change her life, however, didn't come from mental health professionals nor loved ones, but from within. Once pulled from her online friends' place Yis had no choice but to come to terms with the fact that she was addicted. However, she'd still continue to pine after the "games" along with the life she'd built therein and the people she'd met, sneaking off to public starnet hubs and keeping in touch with her online acquaintances, planning another escape from home. A few months later news of the death of her online friend struck her, for he'd died of a heart attack following a five-day binge. She found herself feeling guilty, but also terrified, realising that a similar fate would befall her if she doesn't mend her ways. She attended his funeral, both in real-life and online, thereafter stopping all VR simulations cold turkey. Her older sister worked as one of Nordlorens' biodiversity overseers, helping Yis keep her newfound sense of reality by arranging a volunteer job for her, working with animals, which eventually gave the girl a new path to pursue.
The next year Yis enrolled back in school, eager for knowledge and to keep filling the void. The volunteer-work had re-awakened in her an interest in biology, which had never truly died even during the times when she lived mostly online. Yis Yis studied hard and pursued her exams with the kind of diligence she'd once set aside only for memorizing video game strategies.
Present Day
Yis finished a doctorate in xenobiology and currently works as a field researcher for Nordloren Federal University. She still remains close with her extended family, having grown to appreciate their support over the years and keeps away from virtual reality simulations in fear of falling back into their allure. Though she's had long-term relationships Yis has never been particularily interested in starting a family, saying that she's much happier being an aunt to her sisters' kids as it means that she can just go home when she grows tired of them.
