Akari did not have an easy beginning. She was born out of wedlock, the child of a Japanese woman and a black man. Her birth mother loved her regardless, and did her best to provide for her. Unfortunately Akari's mother died to overexhaustion when Akari was rather young. She was taken in by one of Tokyo's orphanages, one that her mother worked for. Akari's life for the next couple years were lonely until Ren Amamiya ended up visiting the orphanage. He took a liking to the now 6-year-old Akari and spoke to his wife Anne about adopting her. After meeting her, Anne took a liking to Akari as well, and they ended up adopting her. A few months after Akari's official adoption, Anne gave birth to Tatsuo, making her a big sister.

While shy at first, Akari eventually blossomed into a more confident young woman. She is very loving and affectionate to her younger siblings (too affectionate, if you asked Tatsuo). She is also quite sharp, noticing details that might escape others' notice. She can also be very mischievous and sassy, though she does her best to remain professional with strangers. Akari ends up becoming SPIES' advisor early on in the story, after her younger brother Tatsuo awakens to his Persona.

Trivia

• The kanji used to spell Akari's name means "light". This is a reference to how Anne calls Ren her light.
• Akari's dream is to open a boutique. She has little interest in working for high fashion.
• She was the one to coin together Tatsuo's nickname when he was born.
• Ren's childhood nickname for Akari was Princess. Ren occasionally calls her that now to embarrass her.
• Akari is a terrible cook. Tatsuo never fails to make fun of her for this.
