Change is inevitable; but is it desirable? Ever since he can remember, Teo’s relationship with his parents were solely a label. Due to frequent relocations and overseas business ventures, it was rare for them to settle down for longer than months at a time. Because of their irregular schedules, they thought it best if their only son was raised in a more stable environment. After debate amongst family members, they went through the proper channels and appointed guardianship to his grandmother.

Due to having more traditional viewpoints, Teo’s grandmother was fairly strict with his upbringing. Because of her failing body, he grew up carrying out the majority of housekeeping chores. Although he spoke fondly of their relationship, their interactions were scarce in reality.

In lieu of loneliness, envy clouded his early childhood. During school days, Teo would often catch covetous glimpses of his classmates who formed close friend groups—wishing he could be a part of one too. His timid nature made it hard for him to talk to others, and his self-consciousness affected his irrational fear of messing up potential relationships. As a result, he couldn’t help but admire the type of person who pulled people together—desiring to be like that one day.

As if the universe heard his plea, Teo’s wish was granted over the course of a mundane summer. Following the appearance of new neighbors in his residential area, he quickly grew attached to a friendship he was tenaciously pulled into. Ayame and Aindel—the two who easily became the most important people in his life.

The three were often seen together—with Aindel taking the lead as the other two followed. Teo was promptly attached to his new friends, they made him the happiest he’s ever felt. Even when he had a hard time keeping up with academics; even when his grandmother passed away in high school; even when his parents arranged for him to live on his own—he believed that everything was going to be okay as long as his friends were by his side.

Graduation was an inevitable turning point, one that Teo didn’t particularly welcome. It’s a big change, and he was unsure how it would affect the trajectory of his friendships. To calm his insecurities, a trip was suggested to celebrate their ending adolescence. Just the three of them—as it always was.

It was a summer like any other. The last thing Teo remembered was a large hole in the sky… then everything fading to black.
