“How about that one?” Tama pointed at a cage up high, and Kaido’s gaze followed. There sat a white cat with black spots on the top of his head and on his back. Two striking yellow eyes glared sharply down at the pair.
“Would you like to play with him?” the staff member next to Tama asked, and Tama’s eyes sparkled.
“Yes, please!”
The staff member opened the cage, and the cat hissed as he was carried out, annoyed that he was disturbed from his vantage point.
“Don’t be discouraged if he doesn’t play with you right away,” advised the staff member as he let the cat down onto the ground. “He’s just not used to it. He doesn’t get visitors very often. They get… intimidated, I guess.”
“Really? But he’s so cute. Right, Kaoru-kun?”
“Well… yeah.” Kaido felt a blush rise to his cheeks, though he wasn’t quite sure why.
The cat stood back and peered at the pair, examining them up and down in judgment. Tama held out her hand with a smile. “Here, kitty. Psst-psst-psst…”
He stared at the hand silently for a considerably long pause, but Tama held out with great patience. Then finally, he slowly padded his way to Tama’s had and rubbed against it.
“Ah… he’s so soft,” Tama gushed. “Ah, listen! He’s purring. You can even feel it!”
“Oh?” Kaido reached out, softly petting the cat’s head. The cat closed his eyes, relaxed, his purring ever increasing.
“He reminds of you, Kaoru-kun.”
“Like me? How so?”
“Well, he’s grumpy, first of all. But he already loves me, and I already love him.”
“...Don’t say such embarrassing things in public.”
“Ah, you know what? We should call him Viper!”
The sound of his old nickname elicited a loud, angry "fssshhhh," a very clear and distinct 'don’t you dare'.
Tama laughed. “I was joking. Calm down… both of you.”
For at the exact same moment, the cat had inexplicably started hissing as well.
…The two really were the same, Tama thought to herself.
“Hmph… Anyway, he already has a name. See?” Kaido tapped the card by the cat’s cage.
“’Hideyoshi’… huh. Somehow, that’s fitting for him.”
“...Is it?”
“Well, when you think of a black and white cat like this, don’t you think of the name 'Hideyoshi'?”
“I don’t.”
“Eh? Really??”
Hideyoshi looked from one face to the other as he listened their idle bickering, and slowly blinked.
It was, as he would soon find out, just the first of the many playful quibbles between the two that he would witness in his lifetime.
Hideyoshi is Tama and Kaido's future adopted cat and their only "permanent" cat in their residence. Grumpy and standoffish, you can often find him standing a distance away, staring down a new visitor. But despite his looks, he is quite affectionate once he gets used to you. He is the guardian of all foster cats that come into the household, often doing things such as grooming the kittens, laying a blanket over them, or even catching them a mouse. But at the same time, he'll pretend he did none of those things. He has an image to maintain, after all.
Not even the most antisocial of cats could be able to resist the force that is Tama, who has the strange ability to draw cats in like a magnet and have them purring with one swipe of a hand. Tama’s sweet demeanor won over Hideyoshi despite his aloofness, and is likely why he got used to Tama and Kaido so quickly (surprising even the animal shelter employees). He’ll even tolerate things that he wouldn’t usually tolerate if it’s done by Tama, such as being picked up. Tama loves Hideyoshi with all her heart and is often seen talking to Hideyoshi about various things (including about Kaido, to Kaido’s chagrin – “but he’s such a good listener!” pouts Tama).
There’s a connection between Hideyoshi and Kaido that even the gods would not be able to explain. For not a single cat in the entire country of Japan (or even the world) could be more Kaido-like than Hideyoshi. With looks, personality, and demeanor matching to a T, the two vibe on same wavelength like no other. There are even times when Kaido would go jogging and Hideyoshi would immediately come with! Kaido couldn’t be happier to be his owner, though he’d rather pull teeth than admit that out loud.
