The Knife Thrower

"Sometimes the best revenge is living at all."

The rebellious child of two enforcers for the largest thieves guild in Ifaria, Juno previously had a different name, a different job, a different life. In an effort to leave that life behind them and forge their own path, Juno has spent the better part of their last six years trying to hustle a living out of the streets around them. They are a talented musician and performer, though their lack of discipline stops them from actually making a proper living as an entertainer.

Juno has since been adopted into a ragtag band of other misfits as a drummer, travelling alongside the other members and playing cheap shows in questionable taverns to try and scrounge up enough coin for their next fix.

chaotic

It is immediately obvious to anyone who spares Juno a glance that they have lived a life of excitement and danger. With a grin always on their lips and a mischievous look in their eye, everything about them screams 'I'm here to cause problems' and cause problems they will. Juno is not satisfied or properly amused unless there's something chaotic happening around them, and they have no problem with stirring the pot to get the party started.

attention-seeking

They are extremely extroverted and they thrive off of attention (whether it's positive or negative seems to have no affect on them), making sure that they are the loudest one in the room at any given time and that everyone's eyes are on them. To this end they are extremely obnoxious with a gross sense of humor that serves only to get a rise out of the people around them.

volatile

After the party ends and Juno is no longer the star of the show, they crash quickly; their highs are high and their lows are incredibly, painfully low. The second that they are no longer 'performing', the repressed anger and pain that they work so hard to ignore some flooding back in. They can be irritable and mean if they have nothing in their system (drugs, drink or adrenaline), and they would much rather repress and drown these sorrows with more substances than deal with them head-on.

insincere

They are incredibly disingenuous and good at putting on a mask of rakish charm when they want to, which is most of the time; being vulnerable and facing their own emotions and trauma is terrifying for them, and it's something they plan to outrun them as long as they possibly can.

avoidant

Rather than dealing with their struggles head on, Juno would much rather just pretend that they never happened at all. Despite their best attempts to seem unbothered and their determination to just carry on without facing any of their trauma it's very clear that Juno is burdened with something larger than themself and that they have no healthy coping mechanisms or the desire to learn any. They don't talk about their past or their true feelings, instead joking around or getting aggressive if pressed about either.

protective

Not that they need an excuse to start a brawl, but most of the fights that Juno finds themself in are on behalf of their friends (whether they asked for it or not). As someone who has no idea how to channel their feelings (good or bad), Juno's first instinct when it comes to their loved ones is to act as their bouncer. If they even get a glance of someone looking at their friends wrong then they're ready to step in and defend their honor; it's the only way they know to show that they care.

Trivia

• They struggle with addiction, primarily alcohol though they readily indulge in pretty much anything they can get their hands on. Too long without something in their system will cause withdrawl.

• Lost their ring finger on their left hand playing the knife game while very inebriated.

• Their right eye is a light orange while their left is a very similar shade of pink.

• They have upwards of 20 piercings in total, many done by themself.

Background

Born to a couple of high-up enforcers for a thieves guild called The Lunar Brotherhood in Ifaria's underground, Juno was raised in a physically and emotionally abusive environment. Their parents were extremely strict and punished them harshly for any mistakes they made, and they were often exposed to violence or other crime thanks to their parents' work. It was expected that they would grow up to be a part of the guild, and their training and involvement started early.

Juno's full indoctrination into the criminal lifestyle was only dampened by one thing: the circus. During a smuggling job that brought them to a circus tent during a city wide celebration, Juno was exposed to the excitement and the entertainers there and everything changed for them; they craved the energy and joy of the circus with every fiber of their being, and the guild wasn't the only thing that existed anymore. They began rebelling against their parents which resulted in them tightening their leash on them even further. Eventually, the leash broke, and Juno escaped. With the promise of 'if you leave you're dead to us', Juno left the criminal underground, leaving behind their old name.

Juno soon discovered that 'the circus' was a broad idea rather than a thing to suddenly be able to join, and they spent their first few years post-guild on the streets scraping up whatever kind of living they could. They mostly managed to do so with the sword skills they had learned back in the underground and whatever they could pick up. They spent most of their coin on drinks and drugs and parties, as it was the only way they knew how to enjoy themself and get rid of the fear and painful memories they had tried to leave behind.

With more than a few scars from their past and their knife tricks, Juno stumbled upon a band performing in a tavern. With a knack for rhythm and the ability to entertain a crowd, they were recruited by the charismatic singer to join the other musicians and they took the position for the semi-steady income it could provide, and because they had exhausted pretty much every other option. They didn't expect much to come from it, but the other members welcomed them in with open arms and for the first time, Juno found a sense of family among them.

Juno spends their time touring with the band, getting into trouble, or practicing their swordplay skills, though their skills have considerably dulled thanks to the constant shaking of their hands from too many years of pickling their liver.

Relationships

bandmate/crush Darling is the one who saw something in Juno and recruited them into the band. Juno is head over heels for Darling and they make no secret of it, flirting and fawning over her shamelessly. Darling brings light and joy to their life in a way they never thought they would experience, and although their feelings are completely genuine, they are unable to get their act together enough to actually woo her despite craving her attention whole-heartedly. The minute Darling actually shows them any affection they freeze, clueless as to what to do with love once they actually get it.

bandmate Juno looks at Opus like a naïve little brother; they find him easy to get along with (mostly because he's something of a doormat), and they consider it their job to make sure that he remains 'innocent'. They tease and torment him often, mostly about being a nerd, but if anyone tried to cause him trouble Juno would be one of the first to step up and defend him. They don't have too much in common so Juno doesn't spend a whole lot of time with him, but they like him.
