"D-Don’t mind me! I’m just a little wobbly… It’s just how I walk these days after everything. But I’m still useful so please don’t count me out just yet! I have a message for you, from the Central Command First Team, are you ready to hear it?"
― Archer

Archer is an Employee in the Central Command Team One, under Tiphereth. The player meets him on Day 21 when they choose to expand the department.

Archer is a frail looking man with a very thin frame and the appearance of someone who lost a lot of weight very quickly and not in a healthy way. His skin is pale and visibly greying in places with white and pale pink ripple-like scarring over his arms, legs and chest. On his face, Archer has a large scar over his left eye which is a mixture of red and blue due to residual spores left in his skin. His hair is soft teal in colour, and styled in a long fringe over each side of his face - slightly longer on the left hand side to cover one eye. It reaches just below his shoulderblades and hangs dead straight. He has green eyes, but his left eye has discoloured because of blindness and is now a more faded grey-blue colour instead. Archer used to appear much more "normal" but has suffered greatly due to an accident and subsequent brain surgery that has left him with complications similar to those of a stroke patient. Archer appears very lopsided in his gait and his posture, because he's visibly weaker on one side of his body. Often he wobbles while moving, and cannot lift his limbs very high without assistance - even to the point where he might drop things unexpectedly because he loses grip.

Archer's initial assignments were to abnormalities that could cause infection and affect changes in employees as part of a research project. This meant he was primarily working with The Naked Nest, Queen Bee and The Little Prince. He was actually extremely good at working with these abnormalities, getting good work results every time, but suffered from an accident and never fully recovered. Since then, Archer has been deemed unfit to work with abnormalities, and has been demoted to a general messenger for the Tiphereth.

Personality

Archer used to be quite the focussed and introverted individual. Mostly keeping to himself and focussing on his work, but still able to step up and fill in a good role as the Captain of Central Command Team One. It was a position he felt honoured to fill, and he would take every effort to get along with those in his department as well as in the other Central Command Team and nearby Departments. More than anything, he was warm hearted once you got to know him - just quite shy. With work he was always diligent, with a keen eye for detail and extensive knowledge in his subject area - and one of those people who tends to ramble on about his special interests for ages and ages once he gets onto a topic he knows lots about.

However, since his accident Archer’s brain damage has forever altered his personality in an irreparable way. The damage to the areas dealing with emotion have made him quite reckless, Archer has little sense of fear or understanding of danger when he might face trouble around him. It leads him to be quite blindly optimistic and friendly to others, even to the point where others might try to take advantage of him. He also cannot process others’ emotions too well, and he tends to get bad mood swings and seizures that affect his capacity to work and be around others. Despite this, his personality is usually extremely optimistic and friendly - and he is now much more extroverted and outgoing thanks to his lack of inhibition.

Archer is also aware of how unwell he is, and does want to take steps to help himself. He knows his limits, but attempts to push himself reasonably so as to not give up and accept himself as “broken” when he feels he can, and will, get better. His memory is poor, and he tends to space out, but he always means well. Archer also tends to keep his past and his secrets very much to himself as he no longer thinks it is necessary to bring them up - people already know what he’s gone through and can form their own judgements. He doesn’t really care about what they think of him anyways and if they hate him then he’ll still treat them with the same positivity. He also still remains motivated towards completing his work, even if he knows he can no longer be Captain, he will still try to be the best messenger he can.

At times, Archer can get upset over his condition. His mood swings towards frustration and anger at his lacking capacity for movement and memory and he takes it out in private. It has gotten violent, but he has desperately sought ways to cope with it more healthily and only very select few have ever seen him damage objects or himself in anger. It makes him upset that people see it, even if he can't’ really process shame or fear anymore. His low moods have made him suicidal, and on a couple of occasions he’s tried escapism through Enkephalin and alcohol - but decided neither really worked for him. Instead, he attempts to push himself past his internal struggles and focus on helping others as a means to bettering himself in the long run.

Story

History

Archer was born to a poor family who lived inside a large and wealthy mansion estate as part of the serving staff. His mother worked as a cook and general maid to the household, as well as helping to babysit the owner's multiple children, and his father was butler to the gentleman owner. Their living conditions, whilst not the most lavish, were perfectly livable in and Archer's family were by no means suffering as the family that they served did treat their servants with great respect and dignity. Though Archer was not considered to be the same social class as the children of the household, he was allowed to socialise with them and considered many of them to be his friends in childhood. However, he would also be expected to know when to not disturb them, and to behave himself at all times and expect to be asked to help or carry out tasks around the house instead of having those children do it. Even from a young age Archer knew he was not the same as those children, but he was happy that they did consider him their friend.

One of the perks of the household was that Archer had access to their extensive library. So long as he was careful, and kept up with his chores, he was allowed to read there as much as he wanted. Quickly he found his niche interests and passions alongside his schooling at a local Primary School in the area. For Archer, all kinds of microorganisms were absolutely fascinating. He would read every book he could get his hands on that covered the topics of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other spores and moulds that caught his attention. It made him quite the factbook of strange knowledge - to the disgust of some students who really did not want to know what kind of creepy-crawlies were existing on their bodies and in their foods. That did not deter Archer, however, if anything he continued to pursue his interests feverently in order to talk more about them. His parents thoroughly encouraged this, proud that their son was such a keen and confident learner as well as able to occupy himself whilst they worked.

His desire to learn began to develop into performing little experiments that he had learnt from his reading. Archer would look up home-safe experiments he could try out, as well as coming up with some of his own. This included observing mold growth on food that he left out (that experiment was not popular with his parents), and trying out home remedies for colds that he read up on online. Sometimes he would get into trouble at home for the messes, but at school all of Archer's teachers would very much encourage his pusuits and investigations. He was a bright pupil who they could see would go far in the medical and scientific field. Archer attended the local comprehensive school, a far cry from the expensive private schools that the children of the household his parents worked for went to, but he did extremely well there.

Archer finished school and was awarded a full scholarship for science to a local university and he was absolutely thrilled at the chance. He could still live at home, which was preferable as the family could not fully afford for him to be able to live independently yet, and would part time assist around the house to earn money for supplimentary income. Archer threw himself wholeheartedly into his studies, taking additional modules in research projects and placements at laboratories to further his knowledge and open his opportunities. He even won prizes for his projects and for assisting in other big research investigations within the faculty of biomedical sciences. Archer would always leap to any opportunity presented to him and would never back down from a challenge.

After university, job hunting wasn't difficult for Archer as many of the laboratories that he had worked at and researched with wanted to take him on full time. It was thought that Archer could even make it as high up as working for the Head or in the Wings, but mostly that was speculation. For him, it was more about taking a good opportunity to earn money that he could send back to his parents as thanks for all the support that they had given him over the years. This meant he was happy to accept any job that gave him a good offer - and one such good offer was quick to come in after he graduated. This was for Lobotomy Corporation, a well known facility that a lot of his peers recommended he would do well at. Though he hadn't worked with them during his internships, he saw this as a fantastic new opportunity for him to learn and grow in a new environment.

Plot

Archer's career at Lobotomy Corporation began much like anyone else's. He started within the Training Team, under Hod, and completed his basic training alongside the others who had joined the company at the same time. He thought is strange that he, a researcher, would be required to undertake combat training for this job, but he did not question. After all, he knew that Lobotomy Corporation dealt with things that he had never seen or experienced before, and if they needed him to undertake this training in order to be safe then he would do so. Upon finishing his training, Archer was moved to the Central Command Team One, in order to work under both the Tiphereth. They had an interesting start, as Archer was surprised to find out his new "bosses" were so young looking, but quickly he settled into things.

Once settled in his new department, Archer was assigned to lead a research team investigating into certain abnormalities they had contained in the Central Command. These were particularly difficult abnormalities as, instead of breaching, they would rapidly spread infection around the facility, or cause damaging and always fatal growths and transformations upon employees who were not meticulously careful when working with them. Given his background in microbiology, Archer seemed perfectly suited for working with parasitic abnormalities. As such, he was soon assigned to three of them: The Naked Nest, Queen Bee and The Little Prince. All three of these abnormalities had been causing difficulty for employees in Central Command Team One due to the high infection rate caused by bad work, and from how often people found themselves needing to kill thier own friends and colleagues who had either already turned into an abnormality's minion, or were going to. It was lowering morale significantly, and Archer hoped that his research would change this.

Archer's team dedicated themselves to investigating these abnormalities. Not just by working with them but also by researching infected employees and residual spores and other such traces that lead to all the problems. Working in tight security and safety, they did begin to make serious progress towards discovering the infection process in these abnormalities and towards potentially reversing these effects. They presented their research to the Tiphereth and to the Welfare department as a means of bettering employee survival rates, and asked for more time to begin working on a permanent reversal for abnormality infections. So far they could operate infected areas of the body and remove them before total loss of the patient, but it was risky and left significant long-term damage. They wanted to create some kind of permanent antidote, or even a vaccine that would prevent employees from being infected in the first place. Much of this was in development and Archer was heavily involved in leading the research. He made several big discoveries himself, and it was looking promising that a cure would be soon developed. He also made detailed notes on how to safely operate on employees who had been infected - a crude but at least successful way of saving them from painful transformation and death.

From all his hard work with the team, Archer was soon promoted to the position of Captain of Central Command Team One. This meant that alongside his abnormality work and running the research team, he would also be working directly with their department's Sephirah. He got along well with both Tiphereth, and would try to be a good figure for them - especially as he could see that the Male Tiphereth was struggling with working in Lobotomy Corporation. Often Archer wondered how "children" came to be in such a position, but his questions reagarding that would always go unanswered. Archer would also coordinate joint work with the Captain of Central Command Team Two on occasion. It was hard work, and he would often be multitasking, but Archer genuinely thrived and enjoyed that he was doing work he was passionate about. He remained Captain for a number of years, continuing his research.

However. This was when disaster struck - an incident that Archer would not find out was a deliberate attempt to take his life by higher ups until much much later. During his work with The Naked Nest Archer realised the abnormality was unusually unresponsive to his actions. Instead of the good work he could normally achieve with it, it went horribly bad - and the Nest reacted badly to it and fired its spores directly at Archer. He knew right away he was infected - and wouldnt have long before the parasites would begin to infect his brain and body. Terrified, not wanting to die when they were still so far off of a viable cure and with other employees lives on the line he fled back to the research labs at Central Command. There he met with his team, explaining he didn't have long before he would start to show symptoms - and by then it would be far too late. There would be no other option but to operate, despite the risks and potential brain damage that may result from it. There was no other choice.

Determined that he would not die, Archer consented to the surgery. In previous cases, they had had no viable survivors (often they would be unable to work and would be transferred to another department or facility - and Archer wasn't innocent, he knew what that actually meant) and now he would have to put his full trust in his team to perform the task without him overseeing them. But there was nothing else that they could do. Archer put his life in their hands, and the team made every effort that they could to remove the parasite. Thankfully they were early enough at least that not too much of his brain had been fully destroyed - but they still had to remove and damage several key areas in order to fully remove the parasite.

In what was hailed a miracle for the research team, Archer survived the surgery, fully cognitive and aware of himself and his surroundings. It was the best operation that they had ever performed upon an infected patient, and so far proved to be their most successful in minimising damage. However, Archer was by no means his regular self anymore. He was no longer infected, thankfully, but now suffered from severe brain damage from his colleagues needing to remove pieces of the parasite from him. He'd also, according to their reports, suffered a bad stroke on the operating table and almost passed from the resulting shock and trauma. Overall, Archer was allowed to read through the operation notes and understand what was wrong with him - it wasn't pretty.

Total Sight loss in Left Eye - Retina infected and had to be removed.

Inner Ear damage from parasite's entry to body. His Eardums were ruptured but would mend. He was now left with permanent balance and possible vertigo.

Mild Damage to the cerebellum resulting in difficulty performing motor functions, standing, walking and lifting/carrying. This was similar to stroke patients and Archer would need extensive physiotherapy and had to accept that he would not walk or move normally ever again. Thankfully at least he did not require a wheelchair.

Damage to the Paretial Lobe resulting in issues with sensory functions. Archer was diagnosed with synasthesia pretty soon after the operation - his sense of hearing and sight particularly affected by this. He also suffered from slower hearing processing.

Minor Frontal Lobe Damage. Thankfully the least affected area, and as such Archer maintained a generally normal personality and was mostly unchanged from how he had acted prior. However, he was now prone to severe mood swings when upset, and difficulties with his long-term memory. Much of his memories of life prior to the operation were sadly lost to him.

All of these things affected Archer greatly, and he spent over eight months recovering in the infirmary and undergoing speech and physiotherapy as well as counselling and many many evaluations of his wellness to return to work. Though Archer was not deemed unfit to work entirely, and as such was saved from an execution bullet or being transferred elsewhere, he was no longer seen as capable of serving as the Captain of Central Command Team One. He understood this, and dutifully retired to allow another employee to take that position. There wasn't much he was capable of doing with the abnormalities because of his condition, but he did begin making himself useful as a messenger for the Tiphireth. It wasn't the greatest of jobs, but Archer was just happy to be alive and still needed within the facility. His notes, he realised upon returning to his old office, had been stolen - something he was extremely upset and suspicious about because they had been so close to a cure and now all that hope was gone. As such, without telling the Tiphereth, he soon began quietly beginning his research once again.

Trivia

  • His birthday is June 28th
  • Archer doesn't have a sense of shame or self-consciousness because of brain damage. Thus he is not really bothered by his facial disfiguration or by his odd demeanour. He tends to just laugh it off.
  • He can and has had meltdowns from sensory overload because of his mood swings, it tends to happen mostly in private however.
  • Once, Archer accidentally found out about Male Tiphereth being replaced. Since then he has worked to keep an eye on them and protect them where he can. He is, however, still powerless to Angela.
  • Archer can sometimes be seen in other departments of Briah, delivering messages to the Sephirah there. He has, therefore, a good circle of connections he can rely upon.
  • Female Tiphereth tends to berate him for falling over, calling him useless. He shrugs it off.
  • Archer is secretly hoping to find a restorative that can reverse the damage done to himself, as well as prevent further infections from other abnormalities. Even after learning that the facility wants employees to die, he remains determined.
  • His hair is very very soft and he is very proud of it.
  • Archer is 35 years old, making him one of the longer serving members of Lobotomy Corporation, as well as one of the longest living.
  • Though he gets mocked and judged by other employees, he always remains friendly to anyone he meets.
  • Archer calls himself "wobbly" rather than outright say he has suffered an accident or is disabled. He finds it easier to explain that way and is a personal choice.
  • Because of his partial blindness, he sometimes walks into walls.
  • His favourite food is chocolate cake, sweet things are a particular weakness of his.
  • That being said, he has been forever put off eating honey or mushroom.
  • Sometimes he can be convinced to have mushroom soup. But not often.
  • Archer is very soft spoken and tends to stammer a lot and slur his speech. Sometimes he forgets where he was going with a sentence.
  • His favourite colour is orange
  • He likes calming music, especially violins, as they don't overload his senses too much.
  • Archer has a particular weakness in his left side, that's usually the way he tends to fall over and things held in his left hand will usually get dropped.
  • In truth, he knows a lot more than he lets on. Because Archer is good at listening and his colleagues tend to assume he isn't capable of understanding things they talk about since his accident.
  • To prevent things being lost to his long term memory problems, he will always write things down as soon as he can.
  • He now keeps a diary, just in case.
  • He dislikes buzzing noises because it reminds him of Queen Bee.
