Ryu encountered Mimikyu, much like he did with Marowak, during his travels in the Alola region. It didn't take long for them to bond well and become good friends. Unlike its counterparts, Mimikyu is very friendly and cheerful. It can often be seen dancing along the paths, and sometimes one can even hear it softly humming a melody. Since Ryu met it, Mimikyu has carried a Heart Scale with it at all times, never letting it out of its hands. The scale serves no purpose in battle, and no one knows why Mimikyu always holds onto it; it must be very valuable to Mimikyu.

During one of his expeditions through the wilds of Galar, Ryu stumbled upon a peculiar sight: a lone Toxel, crying out amidst the overgrown foliage. Concerned for the small Pokémon, Ryu approached cautiously. Despite its initial shyness, Toxel seemed to sense Ryu's kind intentions and tentatively reached out to him. Moved by the Pokémon's plight, Ryu decided to take Toxel under his wing. As they journeyed together, Ryu discovered that Toxel possessed a unique and electrifying personality. With its playful antics and mischievous nature, Toxel brought a spark of energy to their travels. However, beneath its cheerful facade lay a deep-seated insecurity, stemming from its struggles to control its powerful electric abilities.

Ryu's Chandelure is a very calm and calculating Pokémon. In a dangerous situation, it considers all possibilities and, with a cool head, chooses the least risky option for itself. It has been accompanying Ryu for a long time and sometimes, through its calm demeanor, likes to bring him back down to earth. However, within Chandelure lie unpredictable powers that even it fears. Once, when Ryu was a young boy, he was threatened by a gang of bikers. In response, Chandelure lost its composure and in its rage and fear for Ryu, burned down the entire barn.

As it often overestimates itself and considers itself stronger than it actually is, it frequently rushes blindly and recklessly towards its opponents. It is extremely powerful and difficult to control. Although it is so impulsive, it usually appears very eerie to others; however, its highest goal is to protect its trainer Ryu and make him proud in battles.

It wasn't Ryu who found Marowak back then, but Marowak found Ryu. Fortunately. During his journey through the Alola region, when Ryu stumbled upon a nest of hungry Gumshoos, they quickly surrounded him and hissed threateningly. Thank goodness Marowak happened to be nearby and heard Ryu's cries for help. Upon seeing the situation, it gathered courage and drove away all the other Pokémon with a combination of its powerful bone attacks. Since then, they have been inseparable. It is usually very focused and concentrated, but when Mimikyu is nearby, it often appears insecure and shy.

On an exciting adventure through the Crown Tundra, a shadow suddenly raced past Ryu at a remarkably high speed. Although he barely saw it, the mystery had burned into his mind, and he was determined to find out what this shadowy Pokémon was all about. So he set off in the direction it had raced. It was a very long journey, and just when Ryu was about to turn back because the snowstorm had become too strong, he found himself on the summit of a mountain. He didn't know how he suddenly ended up there. The storm cleared, and suddenly, the equally graceful and intimidating shadow appeared behind him. It was a kind of ghostly horse, with barely discernible hooves and emitting a threatening aura. After an almost hopeless battle, where Ryu ultimately had to stand in front of his Chandelure so it wouldn't suffer extreme hardships, Phantaross retreated and surrendered to the courage and unconditional love Ryu has for his Chandelure. Since then, it has faithfully accompanied Ryu through the Crown Tundra and the Galar region.
