Bodilians are a race that are similar to lobsters, they express telomerase as adults through most tissue, which has been suggested to be related to their longevity. Telomerase, adds a species-dependent telomere repeat sequence to the 3' end of telomeres. Telomeres protect the end of the chromosome from DNA damage.
Vaira went through a rather painful proceedure to extend her own telomeres and create telomerase for a short while longer. She'll have to return to do the procedure again if they make it through the war...
