Maarav was born into slavery. He doesn't know his parents, much less remember what they looked like or even their names. He had no name as a small child. When he was four, he was sold on the black market to a lord in Urdon. The lord he was sold to was Lord Donovan Mala, who gave Maarav his name. Maarav, being a child was given easier tasks, like serving the master's family if they wanted simple things like a drink. Sometimes he got assigned to laundry or helping the older elf servants with the estate gardens. Maarav quickly learned how do tedious tasks. He grew up close to Lord Donovan's son, Rilei, who was a few years older. Rilei helped him learn to avoid making his mother and father mad. Rilei would even pass on his study lessons to Maarav so he could have a proper education. Maarav was extremely grateful and content with his life. 

As Maarav grew up, he became accustomed to sleeping in servants quarters, doing many daily chores, not having much free time and being severly whipped by Lord Donovan himself if he messed something up. Around this time, Lord Donovan's wife and Rilei's mother, Jerina died of unknown causes. Lord Donovan became an alcoholic and was known for his violent behavior. Rilei became depressed as well. Unsure of what to do, Maarav tried to make his friend's life better. The lord began accidentally killing his servants when he beat them, leaving a skeleton crew to do everything in the manor. Maarav managed to survive the beatings but his work ethic began to slip as his body could not take much more. 

Right when everything was starting to seem okay again as the lord and his son were coming out of depression, Rilei suddenly died in his sleep. Maarav felt himself diving into sadness this time as well. Instead of becoming upset, Lord Donovan seemed angry. He pulled Maarav aside and told him that he would be the replacement heir for Rilei. Maarav was confused at this as Maarav of was no blood relation to the lord or his wife. Lord Donovan told him he looked similar enough he could pass a second child that was often kept hidden away. Maarav declined but the lord threatened him with death as he had given him purpose. Maarav gave in and became the lord's fake son, as he didn't want to be cast out of high society for having no next of kin any longer. Lord Donovan introduced everyone new and old to his 'son' and showed him off proudly. Maarav felt bad but also felt like he'd gotten an upgrade in life, if only it weren't a lie. Lord Donovan decided now was a better time than later to have Maarav produce him another heir. He bought a woman from Öpéli to give to Maarav. October Johann, the woman Maarav married. Not long after the marriage, Maarav told October it was a scam and they conducted a plan to run from Urdon. 

After a few months of searching for a sancutary on the run,  Maarav found a college in neutral territory called Osärr to attend. October and him settled down in the town for a while, to lay low. Neither were sure what next step to take in their lives. Maarav figured he would figure it out after college. Maarav took a major in business and minor in forging weapons. October spent the years convincing Maarav to have children with her.
