Universal Backstory

Nearly 2000 years ago, Melanie Shaff, while eating a watermelon she found in the wild discovered a gremlin holed inside. Fearful of the very large creature whom nearly ate it, the gremlin offered Melanie a wish for its life. The girl, ever the whimsical dreaming sort asked to be a witch and so she became Melonie the Watermelon Witch, blessed with magic and eternal youth. Now, in the present, she is a wiser sort, but that whimsy still remains with her as she learns to live life as a witch in modern day Manchester accompanied by her faithful familiar, Lanatus the Gopher Tortoise.

Lionhearts 
In the year 2015, after her adoptive niece, Pom is roped into an entanglement with the God Spirit, Crow, Melonie is tasked with introducing Pom to the world of magic that she'd been unaware of until now due to the magical laws forbidding the sharing of magical knowledge with mortal kind. Ever remaining a mentor and source of advice for Pom, Melonie maintains a secondary presence throughout her adventure, often popping in at unexpected times and generally being the weird watermelon witch she is.
