Eesa was a gifted kid in school who has never actually been able to handle the increased coursework, but places all eir value and self worth on the praise they've gotten for eir grades, test scores, and gifted placement. This leads to em breaking down and burning out practically every quarter, and then having to relentlessly cram to end the marking period with good grades OR getting punished by eir parents for the bad grades, either outcome leading em to burn out again and self isolate until the next quarter starts.
While this gets em into college with a full scholarship, this vicious cycle follows em through eir first few years. Ey end up heavily self-medicating with weed to relieve stress, but struggles to afford it consistently, and fights with eir parents about it when they find out.
Eir roommate Xoann notices them struggling, and suggests the two stay at the dorms together over the summer instead of Eesa going home, and Eesa accepts. Xoann encourages Eesa to join his group of friends, where ey become very close with Ashley and Euxia, who encourage em to either take a lighter course load next semester, or leave the honors program. Instead, Eesa ends up completely switching majors to become an art student, because ey realized ey were paying for eir own classes through scholarship so ey might as well do what ey actually want to do, eir parents cannot stop em from shit anymore!!!!! And now ey're working on becoming eir best self and trying not to fall in love with everyone whose nice to em for 2 minutes.
