AIBELL'S STORY

A bartender's job is to serve drinks, listen to the lonely souls who find their way to the bar, and to take care of the wasted and despondent patrons who waste the night away. When closing time rolls around, there is usually one question on Aibell Hilanu's mind: who in the eight spheres gave spirits to a planet full of children?

As the proprietor and manager of the Broken Banner, a bar frequented by members of the Rivurban militianary, Aibell constantly has to wonder if she is doing the right thing by sending what are effectively children of into potentially dangerous campaigns buzzed on slushed alcoholic Snapple (she often wonders how her Patron gained a license to sell something that strong), but then again, slivers are slivers, and they spend as well as any other coin the employed can get in this mess of a world. If she wasn't held to the bar by her Inheritance, she would leave in a heartbeat and open up a tarot shop and pursue her passion in prophecy, but the same Inheritance that keeps her tied to the job also prevents her powers from properly performing.

Alliteration aside, Aibell has to struggle with how to properly accept her Inheritance. See, an Inheritance is the culmination of a Patron's natural abilities and accumulated wealth that they pass onto their Ancestors. In Dyadus, a troll can either accept their abilities and use them in their daily lives or completely abandon them and choose their path. In Rivurb however, refusing an Inheritance is the equivalent of refusing a fully-paid education and tossing the keys to a new apartment down the drain. And with the campaigns put on by the Dyadian Monarchs Alliance against the Dikasts, Aibell doesn't have the luxury of being able to build her life from the ground up in so-called "wartime."  

This is unfortunate for two reasons. First, her mess of a moirail has decided to taken early swing at having a midlife crisis and went and changed absolutely everything about himself, becoming an almost unrecognizable person. If he didn't have the memories of them playing as wrigglers with Ciphro under the shadow of Lord Equilium's throne with Liente and Piedra, she could have sworn he was replaced by his identical twin. The second struggle she has to deal with is the aforementioned malfunction with her powers. According to records, her Patron was able to predict the future of those around her with perfect clarity and cutting wit. As Aibell grew into this part of her Inheritance, she found her gift never quite worked as she expected. A reading of the cards would tell her and the client to invest in the business of a promising vendor, but the money would be stolen the next day. This would come as a disappointment to both the client who had invested and Aibell, who could have sworn the vendor was close to a massive payday. Neither party could know that the Patron of that unlucky vendor had set aside funds that just so happened to become available the day after the robbery.

To counter her presumably unlucky lot in life, Aibell has taken it finding a number of good luck charms to wear both on her person and on her skin, as apparent by the dual sleeves she has displayed on each arm. Will superstition be enough to ward off the secrets the world is hiding from her?
