Mikan's life has not been kind to her. The younger of two children and the only daughter, she relied a lot on her elder brother, Nakazo. Their parents were poor and abusive, always verbally, usually emotionally and mentally as well. Nakazo bore the brunt of the physical abuse when it came, feeling the need to protect his little sister. But eventually his young spirit broke, and he ran away from home in the night.
This left Mikan to weather the storm alone. She often is found wandering outside, avoiding her home as much as possible. Because of this, Professor Ackley reaches out to her gives her classes, tasks and work. Keep her mind sharp! Eventually he is able to score a task that will lead her out of town- a delivery, in hopes that she'll take it as an opportunity to run away. Knowing she's quite naive though, he paired her with an admittedly equally sheltered boy, Axel Berlitz.
Mikan had no clue that this boy brought his own troubles- in fact, Axel didn't either! Sole heir to a massive inheritance- considering his elder twin brother, Alex, was kidnapped and never seen again when the pair were two years old. However, the pair are blindsided when they not only find Nakazo working in the Battle Chateau and living in Camphrier Town- but Alex, having escaped the clutches of his kidnapper.
The Berlitz' family begins to experience ill omens- realizing that there may very well be a hit on their heads. Mikan decides to see it through the end, ensuring that Axel has her full support through the entire ordeal. He provides his own support, giving emotional aid in watching Mikan and Nakazo repair their broken- and admittedly strained and odd- relationship.

- Mikan loves the sea; it's her dream to live by the beach one day.
- Azurill was her first PKMN ever; he has since fully evolved into an Azumarill. He's her everything.

Bond:
Axel is her first real friend, and Mikan latches fast. He's soft, gentle and never raises his voice. He treats her kindly, and his voice is rather sweet! Her feelings begin friendly enough, but it does take her a while to really realize maybe she was attracted to him all along. The two fit together perfectly, like puzzle pieces being put into place. They back one another up, and completely believe in the other. Mikan finds herself looking to him for protection, when she feels exposed and scared.

A friend she makes along the way! Lynn has a spunk to her that Mikan is captivated by! She's also super impressed that Lynn is the daughter to the Hoenn Champion; and yet, Lynn is so humble! Lynn is almost like a big sister to Mikan in terms of relationship. Mikan finds herself going to Lynn for gossip and girl talk; boys really do suck at just chatting for the sake of chatting, after all. Lynn sometimes points out that Axel is treated different than the other boys, but Mikan is quick to look away and turn the conversation elsewhere.

Caius is so very sweet, and quite supportive! Which is something Mikan appreciates highly. She finds Caius' timid and shy nature charming, though it's admittedly hard to get to know him because of it. It's clear he's most comfortable in a big group, just observing. This doesn't mean there's no friendship though- his logical, slow approach to situations gives the group valuable input. Input that Mikan thinks has saved them many a time.
You would think this would be a joyous reunion, but it's clear Nakazo has changed over the years he's been away. Mikan is unsure what hardships he's endured, but his feelings towards her have become somewhat uncomfortable. Sometimes, she feels he toes the line of going into romantic love for her- perhaps his White Knight syndrome to save her one day warping his feelings for her, alongside the underhanded things he had to do to get to where he is now. Still, Mikan is hoping to restore their sibling bond one day, and to help Nakazo sort out his own emotional and mental issues. Because so far, he's had nobody- not even an Axel, like Mikan eventually found.

It's admittedly a twisting, confusing relationship that Alex shares with, well, anybody in the group. Mikan is immediately drawn to him, seeing as he's obviously Axel's twin brother. But his mind seems elsewhere- distracted. She desperately wishes to befriend him- especially because it's clear he has the same scared, unknowing eyes that Axel and even herself once did. Alex doesn't seem to really care one way or the other about her attempts. In fact, he seems completely focused on Axel- for whatever reasons, she's unsure, but she figures that makes sense.
