Katya (full name: Yekaterina "Katya" Timofeevna Luneva) is one of Sam's potential love interests.
Katya herself is an immigrant - she immigrated from Tver, Russia, at the age of 10 with her family (her parents and her younger sister, Liza). This means that, unlike Sam, she has memories of her growing up in another country. Sam, in contrast, only knows what his parents told him about Odessa.
Katya works at a sweatshop textile factory, where she uses her talent for fixing machines to curry favour with the foremen there. However, she knows that she is ultimately dispensable and fears the day she will be fired, since she is just another unskilled worker in a sea of many. After her father died when she was 13, she and the rest of her family have had to break their backs working at these sweatshops just to make ends meet. Sometimes, she wonders if it's even worth it. She can see no end to this monotonous way of living.
A morose, tired young woman, Katya can be quite pessimistic at times, although she wants to learn to love life again. She is actually very tender-hearted and hopes for the day she can look forward to having new experiences.
A potential love interest for Katya, Sam meets her in front of Feingold's when he accidentally splashes her with his car. Sam sticks out to Katya because he is so different from what she's used to - she's used to people always being tired and defeated, while Sam (on the surface) is energetic, idealistic, and bombastic.
Katya's younger sister. Liza is around 5 years younger than Katya and she is fiery, grumpy, and very critical person. She works part time at a factory too, although she aims to finish high school, unlike Katya, who dropped out.
● Katya hopes Sam can tolerate her pessimistic personality. She fears that revealing too much of her pessimism will scare him away.
● Katya misses Russia and hopes that she can visit again one day, although she knows that it's probably not going to happen.
● Katya has never been to Yiddish theatre but she is amazed when she first steps foot there. She hopes that Sam will be able to achieve his dreams and become the actor he's always wanted to be.
● Katya wants to build a loving home life in addition to having a job of her own. She wonders if Sam is the type to want to settle down, though, so she's a bit scared to express this desire of hers.
