"There's no one protecting my community. If I don't take care of the belt? Who will?"

BACKSTORY

Astra was initially not very interested in becoming a fairy, as she wanted to pursue an engineering career. Ever since she was young, she had been fascinated w/ building weapons, vehicles, robots, ... Currently, she's working on a large plasma cannon that should be able to destroy space junk and debris. However, all of her test-runs failed so far. She frequently pulls all-nighters when she feels like she's on the verge of a break-through. Before leaving for Alfea, Astra had never been anywhere else than the belt. She was convinced she would dislike Magix and didn't want anything to do with it, as most people who traveled abroad, never came back.
This belief originated from the fact that her own mother, Lattea, got so fed up with life on the belt she wanted to leave. Her dad, however, stayed loyal to the community, which resulted in their eventual divorce. Astra's mom just vanished and they never heard anything from her ever again. Her dad re-married her stepmother, Odyssea, fairly soon and as she is the woman that raised Astra, she is the person she calls 'mom'.

When she was eventually recruited by a study program to go to Alfea, she met Gala, a fairy that was 4 years younger than her. For an unknown reason, Gala was very hostile towards Astra, despite being described as a sweetheart to others. And then it turned out Gala was peeved by the striking resemblance between Astra and her own mother—or who would turn out to be their mother.

Gala’s feelings on the matter were very mixed. Whereas Astra brushed it off as a funny coincidence, Gala couldn’t shake the feeling there was more to it. Eventually she confronted queen Lattea with her suspicions, who burst out into tears and admitted she used to be married to another man before meeting Gala’s father. Lattea used to live on the Vajra belt, a completely isolated asteroid belt, as well as Astra’s home. Most—if not all—people from their community, never left Vajra in their life. Living in their bubble of comfort with minimal to no communication to mainstream society, none of them were aware of how dull the life on the belt was, just like Lattea. However, when the magic dimension needed space fairies for a special mission, Lattea got introduced to the world outside of the belt, and never wanted to return to her depressive life. She fought tooth and nail to convince her then-husband to flee with her, but he refused, keeping their daughter, Astra, with him as he did.

Despite being heartbroken, Lattea decided to restart her life, leaving all of that in the past. And thus, she met King Astaeron of Achromeos, the man who recruited her for the mission in the first place. They fell in love, and had Gala, and the rest is history.

Upon learning about her mother’s past, Gala felt so many emotions she grew numb for a while. She felt betrayed, sad, and confused. As if her whole life was a lie. She had a sister. An older sister no less. And Gala liked Astra a lot. It was hard not to. She was extroverted, funny and easy-going. Everything that Gala wasn’t. Something in her wanted to hate Astra, because it was easier than judging her mom for leaving such a lovely person behind. Gala had loyalty towards her mom. Not Astra. But no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t bring herself to hate Astra.

Eventually, Gala’s roommate Vesna, intermingled in the conflict. Vesna’s quite stoic and despite being polite, fairly straight to the point. She rarely speaks, unless she feels like there’s a point in doing so. So the fact Vesna had an opinion on the debacle, was a bit of a wake-up call for Gala. Vesna explained to Gala that Astra never was the issue, a catalyst, perhaps, but not the problem itself. That was caused by Queen Lattea and Gala’s unresolved feelings toward her mom. Despite being the one left behind, Astra seemed to hold less of a grudge toward their mom than Gala did. And it gave Gala a much-needed moment of self-reflection to question why she was so upset about having an older sister. Was it just because her mother lied to her? Or was she scared Astra would take her place? Best her? Despise Gala for something she couldn’t help, just like what she was doing to Astra?

The girls sorted everything out, and letting Astra into her heart, may have been one of Gala’s best decisions ever. Their sisterly bond developed fast and well, and, protective as she is, Astra also helped Gala stand up for herself to her at the time bullies—such as Enigma. Now they’re on good terms. Great terms. To the point Astra may be the closest friend Gala ever had.

PERSONALITY

Astra has somewhat of a boyish personality. She really likes watching sports, especially wrestling, vehicles, ... and isn't too keen on a lot of stuff that's perceived as typically girlish like shopping. Sometimes people will make nasty remarks about it, but she generally doesn't really mind, because of her care-free nature. She doesn't think of herself as being better or worse than typical girly girls, who do find enjoyment in these things, however.
To her, the fact that not everyone is the same and people can like different things, is what makes interacting with others much more interesting. In fact, as a pretty gregarious girl, she enjoys the company of others a lot. To some people her presence can be somewhat tiring as she's very active and talks a lot.

She has a very strong sense about right and wrong, a little too strong if you ask me. In fact, it's a very bad combo with her hotheadedness. It isn't unthinkable that she gets into trouble for punching a bully without a second thought. This happens a lot because she's a pretty impulsive person, especially when she witnesses something she'd consider as 'injustice'. To her being impulsive and/or frank, is still better than regretting you didn't act at all during specific events, even if it might backfire some times.
Due to the fact she grew up on the belt, she is very behind on many things, such as expressions or pop-culture references. Very often, she's the last one to get a joke, if she gets it at all and is often funny by accident. As she's pretty carefree, most of the time she remains unbothered when people laugh at something 'weird' she did or said and she doesn't understand why. But sometimes it does get on her nerves, especially when she's having a bad day. However, unlike the way she defends others, she often doesn't stick up for herself because she's scared of being perceived as rude or childish. So when she's tired of being the butt of jokes, she has the tendency to leave the room and isolate herself for a while, until she has calmed down.

deexhzh-c05de758-128c-497b-9b5b-4d953b87Type of fairy: Space
Specific abilities:
  • Gravity Manipulation (like most space fairies, she can make objects (and people) heavier or lighter)
  • Breathing in space
  • Dark vision

Charmix obtained by admitting she enjoyed being Magix more than she wanted to. Initially she despised the idea of going to Magix, as most people who left the belt never came back. Turns out it's because life in Vajra isn't all that great. Sure, it isn't horrible, but it certainly is boring and bland. When she left for Alfea, she was exposed to a marvelous world full of luxuries she never heard of. It took her quite some time to come to terms with the fact she enjoyed the thought of starting a new life on a different planet.

Enchantix obtained by a comet (ironically enough), was approaching the belt at high speed. It was too big to push it out of orbit with her magic, so eventually, she flew up to it with her unfinished plasma cannon. As it was made to destroy mere space debris and was malfunctioning, she decided to overload it, causing an explosion that shattered the comet into smaller pieces, which could be burnt up by the artificial atmosphere of her colony.
The canon was large and supposed to be carried on your shoulder, so when she overheated it, before tossing it into space, she burnt her left shoulder and cheek.
If it weren't for Enchantix, the blast would've killed her.

Story

Planet: VAJRA ORBIT 9 (/ˈvɑːdʒrɑːˈɔːbɪt naɪn)

She doesn't originate from a planet but lives on an asteroid in a belt called the Vajra Orbit. It's a very small one and only houses about 50 people.
The Vajra belt is basically a collection of small, old space colonies that've lived there for generations. Most people stay on their asteroid and never leave it. As it's floating into space without a hemisphere, there's no day-and-night cycle and it's protected by a magical barrier.
Astra will often say she comes from some forgotten corner in space, as most people are unfamiliar with her belt and those who do know it, tend to look down on it, as it's an abandoned place surrounded by space junk.

TROPES

  • The Big Girl: Astra is physically strong.
  • Closet key: Astra and Vesna to one another. As for Astra, the only person around her age in her colony was her childhood friend Orion. She assumed they were going to get married eventually, because it made sense and he was the only available option for her. The lack of enthusiasm that came along with her future prospects was blamed on the mundanity of it all. It was only when she left for Magix she discovered pretty girls made her feel nervous in a way guys never did, taking a turn for the worse when she met Vesna.
On Vesna's end, she never bothered dating anyone because, just like Astra, her future life was already mapped out for her: She was ought to marry into nobility. She blamed her lack of interest in her male peers on the fact she was going to be promised to some man of her father's choice anyways, saying that there was no point in giving someone else attention.
Despite being from very different backgrounds, in their essence, both of them experienced some sort of comphet due to the foresights of needing to marry a guy whether they wanted it or not. And, as the trope suggest, both of them figured out they weren't into men by falling for one another.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Astra originally wanted to become an engineer and is quite skilled at tinkering.
  • Interclass Friendship: Partially subverted, most of Astra's close friends are social outcasts or commoners. However, as she gets along with quite a lot of people, she has plenty of higher-class friends, such as Gala, and most notably her girlfriend Vesna, of course.
  • Masculine-Feminine Gay couple: Vesna's femininity to Astra's boyishness.
  • Lesbian Jock
  • Missing MomAstra's mom left the belt for Magix and never came back. Untill she herself went to Alfea, she hadn't got a clue what happened to her.
  • Queer ColorsAstra's main colors are pink and purple, with orange added into the mix in later designs. Y'know, kind of like the lesbian flag.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Aside from Vira, all members of Astra's team are societal misfits. Heloys is a sky pirate (and thus a criminal, technically), Prima is the daughter of two master criminals (and looks like them), Astra comes from an reclusive, poor space colony off the beaten track and nobody knows a thing about Circe's past, aside from it being shady.
  • Stellar Name; Astra is Latin for star.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: With Vesna.
  • Tomboy with a Girly StreakDespite being a tomboy, Astra has still long hair, loves the color pink and has several feminine transformations.
  • Uptown GirlTo her girlfriend Vesna. Vesna is an aristocrat, whereas Astra comes from an impoverished colony.

Trivia

  • dem0vr8-d85a3f73-508c-47b3-8d4e-7ef718f4Astra is usually carefree but can become a bit overbearing when Gala is involved, much to her annoyance.
  • She has a pollen allergy.
  • She has a scar on her face and shoulder from the blast that caused her to obtain enchantix.
  • Despite her appearance, she's very strong. Physically. As a fairy, her powers are average, but she's capable of lifting very heavy objects or kicking open doors in one go.
  • Although she gives the impression of being very confident, she's easily intimidated by other girls, especially pretty/well-groomed ones.
    • For example, she used to be extremely nervous around Vesna to the point the latter assumed Astra didn't like her.
  • Her Believix is based on sukeban fashion.
  • Astra is the only girl in her group with a male pixie.
  • She's also the only one who's appearance changes the most over the designs, as she gets a scar past enchantix.
  • She was the first to gain her enchantix, but the last to gain charmix.
  • In the group, she's physically the strongest, opposed to her girlfriend, who is ironically enough the weakest.
  • Astra is actually younger than Vesna, although it's only half a month.
