backstory

camilla grew up in sinnoh’s largest city, hearthome. her mother was a former coordinator from sinnoh and met her father while he was traveling there. her father was the former normal-type gym leader in goldenrod city, johto (before whitney took over), who started working as a professor of literature and history once he retired.

her first pokemon were hatched from eggs—togepi and gible, who eventually evolved into her togekiss and garchomp.

camilla left home at age 15, a bit later than most. she participated in a variety of contests all throughout the sinnoh region, having traveled everywhere by the time she was around 17. she was inspired to become a coordinator mostly by her mother, but also because she looked up to her city’s gym leader, fantina, who was both a successful coordinator and battler. she had met the woman several times during her time living in hearthome, and seen her at many contests, and the advice she gave her was pivotal in camilla choosing to master contests. her first ribbon was earned in her hometown of hearthome, which she always wears on her coordinating dress as a good luck charm. over time, she eventually won the ribbon cup and became fairly well-known in her native region.

while she has not challenged any gyms, camilla loves battling as well (this is an integral part to contests, too, after all). she is a regular participant at the battle frontier in sinnoh, where she spent some time beating all of the facilities. she still frequently challenges the frontier despite this, though.

there will occasionally be exhibition contests around sinnoh that camilla participates in, and she has even had the honor of competing against her idol, fantina, a few times. she has been a judge for several contests held in hearthome as well, and continues to do this on the side.

around this time, when camilla was about 19, her exploits at the battle frontier and contest successes made her even more notable throughout the region. she often did interviews on tv, but she was not so famous that someone unfamiliar with contests would recognize her on the street. fantina had also ended up talking about her quite a bit, and this led to champion cynthia noticing her for her abilities, and offering her a job as a research assistant. like her father, she’s a history and literature buff, so naturally she accepted the offer.

currently, camilla continues to study under cynthia (though still attending contest invites), tasked with exploring the ruins of sinnoh, johto, and unova while studying pokemon mythologies. because of this, she's knowledgeable on ancient pokemon, mostly fossils or legendaries.

she has published many papers about her research findings in conjunction with her father and cynthia, as most of her work consists of observing artifacts and writing up speculative papers. under cynthia, she's also been able to refine her battling techniques.

right now, she's investigating the legend of the three golems, and what could possibly lie beneath snowpoint temple...

personality

for the most part, camilla is a warm and sweet person. she generally acts kind and laidback to most people, with few things that can rile her up. in any case, she loves to do things she enjoys and is no doormat—she will always speak her mind. though she can seem selfish at times, she will ultimately put the needs of her close friends/family over herself. she is generally reserved and intelligent, but due to having high expectations placed upon her, she can often be goofy, dramatic, and exaggerated around people she’s close to and trusts when she is eager to let off steam. the spontaneous and confident persona she puts on during coordinating is mostly a façade, similar to an actor taking on a role.

overall, camilla is relaxed and creative, but has a hint of stubbornness that she gets from her father. her hot-headedness and sarcasm are mostly reserved for her mother, or when raihan keeps pestering her about her garchomp. she jokes around with gordie and her friends, and tries not to take things/herself too seriously.

present

when she was 19, camilla’s father had moved to galar as he got a job as a professor at hammerlocke university. she and her mother stayed behind as it was common for him to always travel around regions for teaching jobs and lectures. at some point, due to his past experiences as a gym leader, her father also got offered a minor league normal-type gym in galar, which he ran as leader while he taught.

several years later, when camilla was newly 21, her father was supposed to meet camilla and her mother on vacation in alola at hano grand resort, but he ended up having a stroke at the airport in wyndon before his flight and had to be hospitalized. camilla and her mother flew to galar so they could be by his side as he recovered.

with nowhere to stay for the time being, they had made accommodations at the rose of the rondelands hotel, but melony, who had become a close friend of camilla’s father as they were close in age and both gym leader colleagues, offered to host them at her house in circhester. it was during this time that camilla met gordie (who had already come home to circhester after leaving due to his fight with melony and taken over as rock gym leader for a good year or so at this point). they grew closer while living together, to the point of them mutually having crushes but not admitting their feelings until much later. she became friends with raihan and nessa through gordie as well.

camilla often liked to watch gordie train, bake for him, or just play video games and watch movies together. as camilla was mostly at the house or in circhester during this period, she had the opportunity to be around and talk with gordie a lot, getting to know him a lot better and secretly attending his matches. at some point her crush became so intense that she ended up joining gordie’s fanclub and buying all three of his photobooks—though, this is something she kept a secret from gordie until they began dating.

with her father out of commission, camilla took over his gym for the ten months that he recovered, although only because he asked her and there were no other replacements. she used greedent, indeedee (female), and snorlax (gmax) for gym battles. piling onto this stress and the worries over her father’s injury, another revelation came through—camilla’s mother was pregnant, and at her age it was considered high-risk.

camilla relied a lot on gordie at this time, who understood the pressures of having to take over a gym he didn’t want to and having to care for his family. this is when their relationship started to shift from friendship to love. she had dealt with a lot of stress and anxiety during these months, and oftentimes she would only breakdown alone for her mother's sake (and to not put stress on the baby); many times, it was gordie who walked in on her crying and would comfort her.

despite this development, it was only just before camilla’s mother gave birth that a confession occurred. camilla and gordie were on a day-trip to wyndon to visit her father in the hospital, and afterward they stopped by a park. they’d been talking on a bench together when gordie finally held her hand and confessed to her—they also ended up kissing. shortly after, camilla got a phone call that her mother was in labor, so they fetched camilla’s recovering father and went to the hospital in circhester.

camilla’s mother gave birth to a baby girl, and a little bit after that her father was fully discharged from the hospital. camilla remained in galar with her father after this, while her mother and baby sister went back to hearthome. she began working as a waitress at bob’s your uncle while attending gordie’s matches, though still working on her pokemon research on the side. she now lives with gordie in a little rowhouse in circhester that he'd been renting out before, while trying her hardest to make contests popular in galar—usually through a lot of publicity activities with gordie or showing off her taped contest wins.
