Radovan was born in Dark Woods. Both his father and Skye were at his birth. His childhood thus far has been easy-going and full of play and exploration. He hangs out a lot with his cousin Caradhras and Sorilea. At a month old, he went to the Free lands for the first time and met a filly named Asunawa. The two of them get along great and he considers her his first friend. He returns home to Dark Woods after that. Several months pass and he hears about the war declared against the Helkaer. He and his mother discover that his father and twin sister have disappeared. He is in despair over their disappearance. A few weeks later, the Helkaer visit and burn Dark Woods to the ground. Radovan is among those who are evacuated to Mount Vigilum while the fire burns. He is devastated by what has happened to his home and swears vengeance on the Helkaer, believing them to be the potential culprits behind his father and sister's disappearances.

A few days after Dark Woods burns, he decides to try and go help his mother. However, he gets lost trying to get to Dark Woods from Mount Vigilum and instead winds up on a dangerous mountain path where he meets a colt named Sal. Sal has been injured by a mountain lion. Together, the two of them try to get back to where they were, but are attacked by the lion before they can escape. Radovan is clawed in the shoulders and his right cheek. The lion almost kills the two of them, but Sal's mother shows up just in time to save them. She thanks Radovan for helping her son and they take him back to Mount Vigilum. He meets with Vojorn on the border and tells her of his little adventure. A week or so later, Dark Woods is finally cleaned up enough for the herd to return back home. Radovan is devastated by the destruction, but hopes that Utopia's intervention can help some. However, his hopes are soon dashed when the Helkaer win the war and the lands are forced under Helkaer occupation. Radovan is unbearably angry that he can't do anything about it - that he's too young and small to fight and that they lost. When the Helkaer finally leave, Radovan is sworn to seek vengeance on those who wrecked his home and those who stood by and did nothing to prevent it. He travels to Dimato Meadow, where he runs into Asunawa again.
