hope worries for tate; she knows she can't get through to him and that she wouldn't know where to start. she tries to be there for him as much as she can without intruding, though tate doesn't think much of it. she annoys him on purpose by being cutesy and teasing him relentlessly, but they both see it as lighthearted.
in their earlier years, tate was basically tyne's guardian due to his condition at the time. he got very paranoid about him and often didnt handle things well due to himself being a child as well (he was 12 when the fire shit happened) and had to mentally and emotionally mature himself as quickly as possible. as he got older, this all bit back at him as it affected his brain chemistry and cognitive behaviours quite significantly, often being quite blunt with others and finding himself in very low moods. he spends as much time by himself as he can, often going on hikes or exploring as he knows he won't be followed (its fucking cold). he uses these distraction techniques as coping mechanisms for his early trauma, as it is much worse than tyne's in some aspects due to him being older than him when it happened.
despite having memories of his severe physical and emotional trauma, tyne isn't aware of tate's importance in that scenario. he blocked out all of the emotional factors and vaguely remembers the incident itself, and quickly got adjusted to tate's blunt and pushy demeanour to the point where he feels like his older brother has always acted like that. tyne doesn't think much of it, and as a result, the two aren't very close due to their tendencies to isolate themselves; tate because of his deep emotional issues that he refuses to face, and tyne because it gradually became part of his nature.
