About
Grew up without any financial security and became a mercenary about it. Turns out he was very good at hitting things, and eventually graduated from the smarmy kind of mercenary into the kind that rich people hired to fight their duels for them, which was a popular method of resolving conflict back in the day. He kinda hates rich people but he loves beating the shit out of them and getting paid for it (i mean they use a proxy champion 9/10 times but that 1/10 where they try to fight him themselves is delicious).
That one guy who is boastful and proud and unfortunately extremely competent. Maurice beat him the first few times they fought, but unlike the rest of these snobby assholes who always think it's a fluke and don't do anything but whine about losing: Melahn actually trained himself in swordplay specifically to fight Maurice.
Over the course of their beating the shit out of each other professionally, they came to respect each other enough to succumb to the inherent homoeroticism of it all(aka they boink in random closets after bouts). And then love blooms from the lust, Melahn invites Maurice to leave the country with him and live the life of a royal concubine.
Maurice accepts, but they don't really get long together like that before the war gets going and Melahn basically nukes Maurice's homeland and then disappears(presumed dead).
Maurice goes back to merc work, grieves, gets over it, then 100 years later Melahn's not-dead body gets unearthed at a construction site and he's back :) Fun
Personality & Outlook
Not very emotional or emotive. Quiet, doesn't really contribute to conversation much. Not exactly trustworthy, but he is dependable to do what he says he will, as long as you keep up your end of the deal.
Takes a while to warm up to people, if he ever decides he wants to like somebody. Doesn't really do verbal affection, prefers to show feelings through gestures or gifts.
Powers & Assets
Anti-mage Combat
A fighting style he developed early in his career, specifically for fighting political duels. He simply noticed that the metagame was all about magic and started flushing all of the ambient energy out of the arena(by using the biggest most inefficient spell he could come up with) and then stabbing the opponent while they floundered.
This worked very well for him for a very long time, almost entirely because none of his peers wanted to stoop to low class tactics, and he didn't give a fuck about their judging him for being a barbarian. A win is a win and he'll stick his fingers in your mouth to interrupt your incantations. Die mad about it.
Crimelord
Even after the champion system went out of favor, people with money are still very willing to part with large chunks of it in exchange for violence and smuggling and whatnot. He's made a life out of it for over a century and has kind of an expansive network of employees, blackmailees, and people who owe him favors.

Melahn [lover]
Listen. You try sword fighting with a guy a dozen times and not fucking him. It's impossible.
Maurice mostly loves him but is still conflicted abt how Melahn used his own fighting style to cripple his country(that he hated anyways but still). Not that he's ever gonna bring it up. Maurice doesn't talk abt his feelings unless under duress.
Michael [ employee / guy who lives on his couch ]
An underling he originally took on because nobody else with sense would give the guy a chance & he thought that would make for a loyal employee. After he found out Michael is raising a child he started letting them stay on his couch & in that proximity some actual friendship has blossomed between them. They bond a lot over their shared hatred for their homeland.
(unnamed) [ Melahn's son / Maurice's vampiric spawn ]
Melahn's son who came to Maurice looking to become a vampire, about 20 years after Melahn's disappearance. It's was a weird confrontation but weirdly cathartic. They both got to talk about the mess Melahn left behind and connect as family. Maurice hasn't actually seen him in a while but it's nice to meet up every few decades.

Q & A
Q: How'd you get the scar?
A: (IC) "I am a treasonous ex-soldier, a professional rogue, a man who's made more enemies than friends. How do you think I got this scar?" His expression and tone are equally inscrutable. Is he pissed or is he...bored? All you know is that he's looking right at you, and you are the source of whatever it is he's feeling.
He holds your gaze for an excruciatingly lengthy moment before returning his attention to his screen. "I used to raise goats. They can get rowdy."
