Molly

Frumpy, antisocial, anxious master's student. A young Scottish man, Molly is studying a few cities away from home while working at a local cafe, bakery, or something similar when he is called in to a trial as a match for spirit forensics. He is to investigate an old case that has been reopened as possible murder, following the ghost of the suspected murderer himself; a man by the name of Ainsley Mayer.

Molly spends a fraught several months in Ainsley's memories as if he is one of Ainsley's friends and falls completely and utterly in love with him. Ainsley is a light in the darkness of the world and the sweetest, most considerate person Molly has ever met; he treats Molly like his dearest friend and, as Molly completes his forensics circuit, is completely innocent. Unfortunately for Molly, he is also three years dead.

Fortunately for Molly, necromancy is a common (if expensive and wildly morally political) thing in this world, and after a while, he is able to make a case to the local necromancer that they find intriguing and they reanimate Ainsley. Ainsley remembers every single trip Molly has made into his memory and has fallen just as in love with him, and he goes to live with Molly for recovery (and then never sees a reason to leave).

Molly doubts and frets and agonizes over his every action and it's exhausting. He is very submissive and shy and goes out of his way to be as invisible as possible. He is absolutely brilliant and has a good heart, but his crippling lack of self-confidence holds him hostage from admitting he has any good qualities.
