Personality
As one of the more prominent officers on the police force, Columbo is rather forceful in nature. He comes off as strong and determined, ready to hear a case and get right on to it. Because of his determination and desires to help the people, most wonder why he's still at the relatively low rank of a plain officer. Upon being asked, he'll most likely tell you that he kept his position because he loves the job. A higher rank would require more time in an office and less time with the people. He's always had a heart for the people, and is often empathetic with those that he deals with. Despite his forceful nature and often times rugged appearance, he is quite friendly and welcoming, willing to help in whatever way he possibly can. However, he is very 'to the book'. Any sort of bending of the rules usually gets him flustered.
This man is stubborn in his ways and tends to have a hard time conforming to change. Anything new implemented into the regime or protocol of the force tends to have him a little irritated for a while. He's also very frugal, or tight with his money. While he makes a decent salary, he still seems content enough to just live off of dollar store items and ramen. He's also more than happy to live in a cheap apartment all by himself, though sometimes he is a little irritated with his neighbors.
History
Born Columbus Walden MacRae, Columbo was given the nickname by his mother, who got the name from a book series she loves reading. Unfortunately, since it's an older book series, a lot of people don't really know why he's nicknamed Columbo, but he finds he likes it more than Columbus. He got teased some throughout his school years but he never really cared much about what others thought of him. So he ultimately got through his education and went to study to become a police officer/detective. He always had the passion to go and help other people while also chasing and catching the bad guy, so being a police officer sounded right up his alley. That and his parents both encouraged him to go and follow his dreams. He passed and graduated with flying colors after four years of study.
With such high credentials, he was easily accepted into his local police department, specifically sector #478 since there are many within the large city he lives in. Even though he works in sector #478, he is placed in different sectors from time to time, at which he usually has to travel farther away but he didn't seem too bothered by it. Despite the fact he could easily move up into a better position, say commissioner, he doesn't want to. He likes where he's at now and feels like he fits right in being a police officer/detective, and can't see himself having any other job. He's happy to serve the people, and he's been serving the people for quite a few years already. There's no stopping him now!
