Dianthus of Oenoe

Half-nymph of the Elysian Fields

The daughter of Amasis, a mortal prince, and Chloris, a nymph-goddess. The couple lived within Oenoe, situated within the fields of Marathon. In the past, Marathon had been a place of war. Times were peaceful now, but the land still struggled: in addition to a terrible drought, a monstrous white bull rampaged the plains. It was discovered, however, as Dianthus grew older, that her innate powers as a nymph rivaled even that of her mother's. Her precense within Oenoe alone kept the fields fresh and green, even as drought ravaged the surrounding areas.

When she was about 20 years old, the hero Theseus came to the fields with the intention of slaying the Marathonian Bull. Dianthus offered to aid him in any way she could. As the two worked together to come up with a proper plan, they also fell in love. Theseus promised her that after he had slain the bull and was officially recognized as Prince of Athens, he'd return to Oenoe to ask for her hand in marriage. Unfortunately, fate had other plans for the two of them; they never saw each other again while alive. It was only within Elysium that they were finally reunited. Theseus finally made good on his promise, and proposed to Dianthus within days of them finding each other again. Dianthus accepted right away. Despite this, Theseus had some wrongs he wished to right before allowing himself the joy of becoming Dia's husband...

One task Theseus placed upon himself was to find the Minotaur Asterius, who had been his greatest foe during life, with the intention of granting him a place within Elysium. Initially, this caused some strain upon his relationship with Dianthus- his infatuation with Asterius was clear as day, even if Theseus himself did not notice. Soon, however, Dianthus and Asterius found themselves connecting; they were more similar than they were different. To Asterius, his bond with Theseus felt like fufillment, and his bond with Dianthus felt like a home he never had; both are woven with love. These days, Dianthus cheers on both as they battle within Elysium's Arena as their wife and biggest supporter.

“If there is life after the Earth-life, will you come with me? Even then? If we're meant to be something, why not together?”

- Mary Oliver, "From West Wind," Devotions.

Though she is terribly shy, Dianthus' gentle personality and soothing voice have made her one of the more shades employed within Elysium's library. She is passive (to a fault), which makes it easy for others to talk to her. The truth is, Dianthus' shyness develops from her both being scared of vulnerability... and slightly neurotic. She's trying to work on this, however.

Those who are close to her see her as kind, but also stubborn, pushy, and just a wee bit self-centered. Some of her flaws are slightly hypocritical in nature (such as: she tends to get annoyed when others are impatient, despite being quietly impatient herself). If you pointed this out to her, she may take offense to it... but such small hypocrisies are just a part of being human.

King Theseus
Married

Though Theseus can no doubt defend himself (he is a warrior after all), Dianthus is still protective over him. She is one of the few who sees the good in his heart.

He is thankful for all that Dianthus has introduced him to; before her, he never thought himself capable of gentleness. Now he knows he can be that, and much, much more.
