As a child, Thomas had always wanted to become a Templar and was excited when he got approval to start his training.
But as years passed, after completing his training, his view of Templar Order had changed

After being moved to Circle of Jainen, Thomas finds Circle-life boring and dull. Most templars, especially those who are older, are just husks of what they once were. He’s seen enough of his fellow trainee’s becoming like that and he’s scared of it, not wanting to turn like them.
In time he’s convinced Templar Order seems not like how it should be. Not what he thought it’d be.

Ilriel

First days in Jainen Circle Thomas found himself completely lost, not knowing where is what. He seemingly took every turn but always ended where he had started.
Ilriel picked this up after Thomas had went past him for the fourth time, as he himself had entertained himself with watching the frustrated Templar go circles, and decided it’s ridiculous enough. Asking where he needed to be and taking him there, Ilriel decided to get to know Thomas, as he seemed more open than the others in there. This started and led to them developing a slow paced relationship one day.

Relocation in 9:32 Dragon

Getting relocated to Lake Calenhad’s Circle Tower was a surprise to him. He had no original plans nor was he sure he even wanted to, not after hearing what happened there during the Blight, but apparently more Templars were needed there and Knight-Commander found him fitting to do it, as well as watch over the traveling mages from their Circle, with another senior Templar, as it was taken note how some mages weren't as squirmish around him.
This was the plan until the storm shipwrecked everyone during their voyage. For now it's only known very few managed to survive.
