Born in 1878, Rachel is Joel's mother. She had grown up in Lemberg, Galicia (then a part of Austria-Hungary, now in Ukraine) and immigrated to America in her early twenties with her husband, Pinchas.
Proud and cold, she was very proud of her good looks in her youth. She is ambitious (although she doesn't have a good work ethic) and longs for a better life. This is why she (along with Raisa and Lev, who are her friends) pushes Joel to get good marks so he can get into an elite university.
Joel probably got his hot-headed personality from her. She is much more temperamental than Pinchas and often speaks without thinking. As such, she has a tendency to hurt her husband and son with her sharp words...

Tapas: The Book of Joel
Joel Farber | Her son. She has always been a "tiger mom" of sorts to him. Accordingly, she's always pushed him to be less shy, more ambitious, and less of a pushover. |
Pinchas Farber | Her husband. As the pressures of living in America get to them, she starts to become increasingly resentful of his laid-back and "lazy" lifestyle. She hopes that she can get him to become more ambitious, but is it even possible at this point...? |
Chana Spitzer | Rachel's former employer (before Spitzer's Shirts closed down in 1917) and friend. They used to talk a lot about parenting and still do from time to time. |
Malka Spitzer | Rachel knows that Joel and Malka have a close relationship, and has a lot of doubts whether this is for the best. She doesn't think Joel can handle Malka since Joel is, in her own words, "poor at communicating and prone to arguing with everyone and everything." |
Raisa Abramova | One of Rachel's oldest friends on the Lower East Side and Sam Abramov's mother, Raisa and Rachel talk a lot about their sons. Both of them dislike how Sam has dropped out of law school to pursue acting, but Raisa is now starting to come to terms with Sam's decision and is happy that he's found what he wants to do in life. |
● Rachel suffers from some form of rage disorder, which started developing in the 1900s as a result of the pressures of immigration - she can't quite control her anger at times, and this is what leads her to say and do unpredictable things at times. |
● Rachel doesn't like herself very much, and this is why she is so judgmental at times, because it's a reflection of how much she dislikes herself. She feels a lot of guilt about this viscous cycle. |
● Rachel, unlike Lev and Raisa, believed that assimilation into Anglo-American culture would help their family get better jobs, so for a while, she insisted in speaking only English to Joel. She also thought this would help Joel get over his stutter (he stuttered in both Yiddish and English). However, she soon gave up, particularly since Pinchas never cared about assimilation and thought switching to only speaking English at home took too much effort. |
● Rachel has a lot of regrets. She realizes she hasn't been the best parent and that one of the reasons Joel spends most of his time away from home is because of her. She wonders how she can mend their relationship. |
