Matilda is the older sister of Research Assistant and Pokemon Ranger in training Magnolia. When Matilda became of age, she applied for the Pokemon Rangers Academy, where she met her partner Pokemon Gible. Despite her conviction, it became clear Matilda could not perform up to par for the expectations of a Pokemon Ranger. Matilda drops out, returning to her hometown of Vientown where she falls into a fairly deep depressive fit. This gets worse when her younger sister Magnolia later applies and passes with flying colors, becoming one of the youngest Rangers in history. Grappling with both the want to be supportive of her little sister and the gnawing jealousy eating away at her heart, Matilda sets off on a journey with Gible to try to sort out her conflicting emotions.

Matilda gains a party of various dragon type Pokemon and learns to care for them all, regardless of where they came from.

story

As the eldest daughter of a family in Almia, Matilda always wished to be a Pokemon Ranger. She grew up watching the rangers of Vientown come and go on their missions to protect Pokemon and people, admiring their dedication and hard work. The base leader of Vientown urged young Matilda to work hard and become one someday, and thus began her path of studying.

Eventually, Matilda entered Pokemon Ranger Academy at age 16. She became friends with her partner Pokemon Gible, who trailed behind her constantly after being the last Pokemon left after selecting partners. The bond between the two grew as Matilda found herself falling further and further behind her classmates. At one point, Matilda failed an important test and dropped out of the Academy at age 17, quickly becoming depressed. This depression became deeper as Magnolia, Matilda's younger sister, entered the Academy and began to show much higher results than her. It became clear to Matilda that Magnolia was set to become one of the youngest Pokemon Rangers in history, and the mere thought caused her immense stress. After all, she wanted to be proud - but how could she when she was watching her sibling succeed where she failed?

Exploring Sinnoh

Overcome by gnawing jealousy and guilt, Matilda packed her things and set off to explore Almia on her own, hoping it would offset the feeling if she were to travel away from Vientown. However, without a clear goal in mind, Matilda quickly found that there was little point to trying to get away from her Pokemon Ranger-related stresses when the whole continent was full of them. She returned home temporarily to pack further, telling her parents vaguely that she was going to leave the country to find herself. While concerned, Matilda's parents knew that as long as she had Gible, Matilda would be fine. Matilda left not long before Magnolia's Ranger Academy graduation.

At age 18, Matilda sailed into Canalave City in Sinnoh. There, she met Basil and Goomy and quickly became friends with them. Matilda found that she enjoyed Basil's presence and asked her to join her on her journey through the Sinnoh Pokemon League. The two are now currently on the road.
