There are four black helldragons on record: Black, Sable, Onyx, and Ebony. The first one is long gone. The second was on homicidal rampage until the third killed him, then promptly vanished. The fourth, Ebony, is Cartel.
Chalice is the third, Onyx. Upon killing Sable, all of the magicself souls Sable had collected went to him - some hundred angry, confused minds suddenly squalling in his consciousness.
Chalice sequestered himself away so he couldn't hurt anyone, and is slowly but surely going mad.
