Marrian Hadzuki Bayani (バヤニ葉月, Bayani Hadzuki) is a fan character for the Jujutsu Kaisen series. Marrian is the Head Taijutsu Instructor at the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College. As the head instructor, they are in charge of coordinating instructors, curriculum, and recording student progress in addition to the usual teacher-y duties of organizing and running classes. Due to their workload, and also at their request, they are rarely contracted to travel to exorcisms abroad or even within the country. In exchange, they are on-call 24-7 to assist sorcerers in the Tokyo area.

They always use their Japanese name (バヤニ葉月, Bayani Hadzuki) unless sufficiently close to someone.

Appearance

Marrian’s uniform is standard besides the addition of bright orange trim along the sleeves and hems. They wear a mid-thigh-length skirt with baggy knee-length shorts underneath, as well as sporty sneakers that match the standard jujutsu purple (of course, the laces are bright orange, too). Their uniform in highschool was similar, but was sleeveless and had baggy pants instead of a skirt+shorts.

Their casual presentation always consists of a blouse with sleeves rolled up, a skirt with black shorts underneath, and immaculately clean white sneakers. They enjoy coordinating the colors of their blouse, skirt, and shorts.

Personality

Picture a ray of sunshine shining through a storm cloud, its light penetrating the fog and giving the gloomy landscape an idyllic glow. Is Marrian the cloud? or are they the sunbeam? The landscape?

Marrian stands straddling the border between frazzled and put-together, childish and mature, serious and flippant. At first glance, this can make them appear air-headed and inconsistent. Most that meet Marrian leave with the question of “How can someone so small and so bubbly be a sorcerer, let alone a head instructor?” and that is a question they also ask themselves everyday. The truth is that Marrian no longer remembers which parts of themselves were adopted as a mask - a coping mechanism - and which were traits they genuinely had from the start.

They give 150% of their energy to whatever they do, whether that be their work, their hobbies, or even simple conversation. It can be exhausting to be around them. It’s exhausting to *be* them. They move perpetually forward, rarely looking back, even when their forward charge fades into a drift. The result? Lots of friendly acquaintances and few in the way of true friends. But that’s ok, because giving 150% is enough. As long as you’re doing your best, you don’t need anyone or anything else.

Right?

Besides, no one would like the real them anyway. Underneath their chipper attitude is a somber and lonely person, someone that never recovered from having their family and home ripped away from them. One can’t heal without slowing down to reflection, but a boulder rolling down a hill cannot stop on its own.

Abilities and Powers

Overall Skill: Despite their initial position as a grade 2 being said to have been granted by nepotism and corruption on account of their father, causing rumors that their promotion to grade 1 was a similar situation, Marrian has been able to keep up with and genuinely assist Kento Nanami and other Grade 1 sorcerers in fighting high-level spirits. They have also defeated two total special grade spirits with some assistance from lower grade sorcerers.

Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: The traditional martial arts of Marrian's homeland are world-renowned for being the most advanced practical modern blade system in the world. Marrian has had a love for martial arts since their humble beginnings, and watching them in combat makes this obvious. Their movements are swift and precise, with rough practicality rather than grace.

Master Weapons SpecialistHaving been thoroughly trained in martial arts, Marrian is familiar with how to wield most weapon types, but they prefer blunt staffs and short blades. They admit that Maki Zenin is slightly more versatile and skilled due to having specialized in them, but Marrian still wins their sparring sessions 80% of the time.

Jujutsu

Cursed Energy Manipulation
Great Cursed Energy: It is unknown whether their vast amount of cursed energy is a result of their lineage or a possible Heavenly Restriction, but it is undeniable that an unproportionate amount of cursed energy is packed into their small frame. Due to the nature of their innate technique, they are able to control their energy with a precision rarely found in the jujutsu world. They use their cursed energy in tandem with their innate technique to reinforce individual parts of their body so that they do not incur damage from the great amount of force they are able to use.
Black Flash (黒閃 Kokusen): A technique that creates spatial distortion when a user connects with an impact of cursed energy within 0.000001 seconds of a physical hit. The phenomenon causes cursed power to flash black, creating a more potent attack to the power of 2.5 of a normal hit. Marrian can consistently land two black flashes in a row, though not at will.
Heavenly Restriction
Fun-sized: Marrian's small stature is speculated to be a Heavenly Restriction that grants them greater cursed energy, extremely fine control of their cursed energy, and increased durability.
Binding Vows
Bide: Their signature Binding Vow. For every minute that Marrian does not attack during a fight, their next attack will be 5x more powerful for each minute spent dodging. This is the ability that allowed them to beat a special grade spirit.
Revealing One's Hand: A commonly used Binding Vow by many jujutsu practitioners. By divulging how his cursed technique works, Marrian can maximize the output of cursed energy in their next attack.
Innate Technique
Force Transfer (力転送, Rikitensou): Their innate technique is novel to both their mother’s and father’s families. Marrian can utilize cursed energy to manipulate the physical forces of objects in their environment.
Uses
Power (kanji, romanization): Marrian is able to directly manipulate Applied Force, and Friction Force using cursed energy. For example, imagine Marrian is standing on a highway. A truck approaches at a frightening speed. Marrian has several options:
  • Punch the truck, (or in the direction of the truck if it’s close enough) using their fist to apply enough cursed energy to create enough Applied Force to stop the truck’s velocity.
  • Instead of punching the truck, they can use Cursed Energy to create Applied Force on themselves to fly out of the way.
  • Instead of punching the truck, they punch the ground and use Cursed Energy to increase the Frictional Force of the road, stopping the truck with friction.
Conversion (kanji, romanization): Using cursed energy, Marrian is able to convert the magnitude of an object's Applied Force, and Friction Force freely between each other. They are also able to transfer the Spring Force, Tension Force, and Applied of an object into the Applied Force or Friction Force of another object. For example, imagine Marrian is standing on a highway. A truck approaches at a frightening speed. Marrian has several options:
  • Use the speed of a car or the truck itself and transfer it to themselves, propelling them in a direction they choose. This stops the vehicle.
  • They can also take the force of a car moving at the same speed in the opposite direction and transfer it to the truck, causing both to stop.
Bolstered Power (kanji, romanization): Marrian is able to use conversion and power at the same time, transferring the forces harvested by Conversion into an impact created by Power.
Telekineses (kanji, romanization): Their innate technique gives Marrian telekinetic ability via the use of Conversion with fine motor skills (ex, the index finger). However, manipulating forces in many directions at once is more difficult than in a single direction, so they have to concentrate to float objects bigger than a baseball and linearly more the bigger the object.
Barrier Techniques
Simple Domain: Due to not being able to manifest their inner domain, Marrian uses simple domains as a means of protecting themselves from the domains of cursed spirits and other sorcerers.

Equipment

Cursed Tools
anon-icon-9.jpg Bangkaw.png anon-icon-9.jpgMarrian has three close combat weapons reinforced with cursed energy, usually bringing only one or two to a mission at a time. They obtained them over the course of their 3 year period in the Phillippines after high school, hunting the Special Grade Spirit that killed their mother. They keep whichever two weapons they've chosen for the outing at their waist or on their back.

All three are resistant to impact both physical and of cursed energy.

Bingit ng Humalik (Edge's Kiss) - An obsidian Balisong engraved on the handle with a triangle with a single line through it. It can generate cursed energy for the user by flipping it rapidly.
Affectionately dubbed "Kedge."

Alon ng Bunngo (Wave's Impact) - A pair of 2.5 foot rattan bastons that can merge into a 5 foot bangkaw. These specialized sticks depict the story of The Battle of the Crabs Marrian's favorite Filipino folktale, through a series of images on its surface. Each baston depicts half the story, and the bangkaw form adds detail in addition to merging the image series. By timing a burst of cursed energy through the weapon upon impact, a shockwave of cursed energy will both hit and push back a cursed spirit.
Affectionately dubbed "Fiddle."

Masmabait na Simoy (Nicer Breeze) - A traditional Kalis with a blade wrapped in layers of fine purple silk. The silk is imbued with a heavenly restriction; it is only effective when piercing a cursed spirit with its tip, otherwise the blade simply slides off of the monster.
Affectionately dubbed "Very."

Trivia

  • They won a few karaoke competitions while in junior high.
  • They really like orange frogs. They have little clay figures of orange frogs in their pockets at all times to give to people in distress. Each has a supportive message written on a piece of paper in its mouth.
  • Their favourite mug of their entire mug collection is Keroyroy, a glazed ceramic orange mug in the shape of a frog.
  • Due to their father paying for anything they wanted in highschool, and them not really wanting much for themselves, Marrian liked to give very expensive gifts to people they appreciated. They started a rumor that a benevolent youkai was providing the gifts. Only some believed it.
    • Nanami was given a very expensive set of chef knives on his birthday during his last year at Jujutsu High.
  • They can speak four languages: Tagalog, __, English, and Japanese.
  • They sometimes get words mixed up, or speak in the wrong language.
  • They are always hyped up on caffeine because they spend all night indulging in various hobbies. Some of these hobbies include; Hydroponics, Anime, Video Games, Baking, Manga, Board Games, Competitive Jump Rope, Karaoke, and parkour.
  • They sleep for 24 hours every few weeks. It is not healthy, but they don’t really want to change it.
  • Marrian’s maternal grandmother passed away before Mary-Anne could finish their Babaylan apprenticeship. As such, neither she nor Marrian are technically true Babaylan. Mary-Anne’s middle name, Abayan, is the word for the spiritual guides Babaylan usually have to help them interface with the spirit world.

History

Marrian is half Japanese on their father’s side. Their mother - Mary-Anne Abayan Bayani - was an indigenous Filipino who went to Japan to work as a maid in order to contribute money to her small rural village. She was the only daughter of a Babaylan, a filipino equivalent of a shaman or sorcerer. Their father - Jiken (治剣)- was, at the time, the heir to a large pharmaceutical company owned by a prominent sorcerer family - the Kusuwari clan (薬割). The two met on the day a grade 1 cursed spirit attacked the Kusuwari home. Mary-Anne defended the rest of the house staff until Jiken arrived just in time to deal the final blows.

The two became close, and eventually, Jiken was able to encourage Mary-Anne to register as a sorcerer in both the Philippines and Japan. However, when she became pregnant, the two ended up fighting over which culture’s sorcery their child would be raised under. Afraid of the possibility that Jiken would raise their child without any regard for the ways of her people, she fled back to her little village.

Thus, Marrian was born where generations of their mother’s line were born. Their early childhood was spent immersed in the way of their ancestors. They learned basic rituals, of common cursed spirits, how to exorcise using their cursed technique, and the thing they ended up loving the most - martial arts.

But, life in the Provinces was by no means easy. They survived using what remained of the money Mary-Anne had earned in Japan, bartering her family’s services as sorcerers for anything extra Marrian needed. Eventually, the money ran out. At the age of 11, Marrian and their mother were forced to move to a city to pursue a source of income. Given Manila is the densest highly-populated city in the world, rife with cursed spirits of all sorts, she decided on heading there. Marrian went along with the idea that they were to be helping their mother fight more powerful spirits. Upon arrival, however, Mary Anne thought it appropriate that her child have a good education.. So, for the first time, Marrian was thrust into an actual public school.

Marrian doesn’t consider themselves intelligent, but they managed to impress many by their ability to keep up with the material being taught despite being educated in the Provinces. Of course, this might have just been because of the way city-dwellers look down at their rural counterparts. “You’re pretty good, for a freak,” was a phrase Marrian got used to hearing. It didn’t help that their stories of home often involved aswang, spirits, and sparring anecdotes. But, their mother had prepared them to expect ridicule, so they held their heads up high all the way until the end of their time in their home country. Their days were spent at school, their evenings doing homework and additional research, and occasionally their mother would bring them with her on a mission.

Mary-Anne could have enrolled Marrian in an actual school for sorcery, but despite Marrian’s pleading, she insisted on doing otherwise. “Exorcising spirits is not the way to success,” she would tell Marrian, referring to the overworked and underpaid nature of the job - especially in the Philippines, where the official avenues for sorcerer work mirrored the local government - rife with corruption and institutional bias. “Go be a doctor, or maybe a lawyer. Earn money for the village. Be a sorcerer on the side to keep our traditions alive, but don’t make it your life.”

If only their life could remain so simple. If only that choice was an option.

It was a normal night after a normal day. Their mother took them on a mission - take care of a grade 2 spirit together - a simple swarm of Tiyanak - and go home. It was indeed easy. Marrian was growing well into their cursed technique. Their mother told them she was proud. They began the walk home.

And then there was a sound so loud and shrill that Marrian felt dizzy and nauseous. A woman with floor-length white hair, impossibly long and sharp nails, flawless skin adorned with golden jewelry, and entirely black eyes walked onto the road in front of Marrian and their mother. It smiled gently, but that smile grew and grew until it was sadistic and malformed.

October 17th, 2006. The next thirty seconds defined the next 12 years of Marrian’s life.

Their mother did not survive the attack. She spent her last vestiges of strength getting Marrian to safety. Her last words as she activated the circle of teleportation was for Marrian to find Kusuwari Jiken. “That’s your father’s name, Marrian,” she sobbed. “I’m sorry I never told you, but please find him. He’ll take care of you. He’ll--”

Just like that, she was gone, torn apart and eaten alive by the special grade cursed spirit Marrian later learned was an aswang called Gabunan -  an aswang so old and powerful that they are eternally youthful and able to survive daylight as well as shape change. The Gabunan’s impossibly-long-nailed fingers can morph into whatever they please, and any wounds they incur can easily be regenerated. As it stood, Marrian didn’t stand a chance, and neither did their mother.

They gathered what they could and returned to their village on their own with many a hope on their shoulders, only to find that much of their ancestral land had been sold by the local government, purchased by a company to set up a plantation. Many of those they had grown up with had been forced out of their homes and were no longer able to keep in contact. All that remained were the most stubborn of the population - most of them elderly, and all significantly older than Marrian. But it would be okay, because they would let Marrian live with them, right?

Right?

“You’re so young.”
“Your father is rich; your life will be easy.”
“Don’t waste the opportunity to live a better life.”

But what life could be better than living in what remained of their home? What life could be better than keeping their mother’s memory alive by staying here, by doing what she did?

“Don’t waste everything your mother built for you.”

October 20th, 2006.

It wasn’t hard to find the Kusuwari Company. The first advertisement Marrian saw upon arriving at Narita airport had the name emblazoned on it, selling some sort of supplement. Or maybe it was a medicine? Marrian wished they had paid more attention to their mother’s attempts to teach them Japanese. Regardless, it only took a simple search on google maps to find the company headquarters.

“I’m looking for Kusuwari Jiken,” Marrian told the stern desk lady in broken Japanese. “He’s my father. My mom died. I’m all alone. Please help me find him.”

Marrian returned several times a day for a full week until they were finally given an audience with the CEO of Kusuwari Pharmaceuticals. Jiken took one look at the fifteen-year-old Marrian and turned to his assistant, sighing heavily.

“Take care of this.”

Marrian couldn’t understand what was said next, but within the hour they were whisked away in a fancy car to the outskirts of Tokyo, high in the mountains. It almost felt like home, but the buildings were too different. The air was too cold. They followed their father’s assistant into a room where they were left alone until the morning. Marrian didn’t sleep that night, cramming as much Japanese as they could on as many apps that they could download.

That was their first of many nights at the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School.

The next day, Marrian was told by the principal that they were to shadow various classes as well as attend an intensive language school program until the start of their first year 6 months in the future. Their questioning of things like entrance exams, paperwork, and tuition were all waved off. “It’s taken care of,” every staff member they asked would say. “Don’t worry about it.” But Marrian did worry.

They eventually learned to stop asking questions.

They studied Japanese for 10 hours a day, and at Jujutsu High for the rest of their waking hours. Those 6 months passed in a blink, and so did the year after that, and the year after that. Marrian truthfully only remembers a handful of moments of their high school career. Missions. Training. Studies. Missions. Training. Studies. They focused on moving forwards, on living a life their mother would be proud of.

At least, that’s what they told themselves. In truth, their real goal was to return to Manila, to track down the Gabunan and avenge their mother. They knew better than to share this goal of course. Suguru Getou’s recent betrayal and subsequent banishment meant the teachers were on edge. Imagine if it got out that Marrian was training so hard not to protect innocent people, but for revenge? “What about after?” the teachers would probably say. Maybe they would be pre-accused of potentially going rogue. Their father was paying them a lot to keep tabs on them after all.

Speaking of their father, Marrian became a grade 1 sorcerer in their 2nd year at Jujutsu High after he sent a suspiciously high donation to the Jujutsu elders. They were immediately assigned missions perhaps too dangerous for their ability, but Marrian made it out of all of them alive. Older sorcerers and classmates made sure Marrian knew they thought they didn’t deserve the title, and Marrian almost believed them, but ultimately they kept their chin up and weathered the storms.

Once they graduated from Jujutsu High, Marrian told their father that they were going to the Philippines to visit family. It was not a complete lie since they also planned on tracking down what remained of their extended family. They were gone for three years, during which they lived and breathed their goal of avenging their mother. Day and night Marrian scouted Manila, working with other sorcerers occasionally but remaining independent of any organization.

Their tireless pursuit of the Gabunan eventually culminated in the spirit’s exorcism. Several sorcerers were present at the time, all rendered incapacitated by the spirit. Their witness testimony allowed Marrian’s reputation to soar. The sorcerer organizations of the Philippines and Japan fought over who had claim to Marrian’s services as a sorcerer. Marrian made the decision for them; they walked out of the ambassador negotiations after the first hour. Much to the chagrin of the Philippines Sorcerer Association, Marrian went back to Japan.

It would be idiotic to choose the place that prioritized money over their people. It would be stupid to not take advantage of their father’s financial support. Their mother wanted them to live their life happy, and it would be easier to do that if money wasn’t a problem

And so, Marrian returned to Jujutsu High, where they were then talked into becoming the martial arts teacher. This saved them a job search, and gave a valid excuse to not have to travel around. It was a perfect arrangement, and they would be stupid not to take it.

Marrian tried to get an audience with their father once they returned, sending a message via his assistant that the thing that killed his first lover was dealt with. They received no response.
