Werner Fendler

Character

Werner is the main antagonist in Catalyst of the mind. He is a neurosurgeon and computer scientist double major, and the older brother of Raymond Fendler.

Werner is a very concise and specific person. He can be extremely intense and is often calculating without meaning to be. He loves to talk especially about what he's working on, or the science behind whatever it is. Behind the mask he puts up, when he gets extremely stressed, Werner does have surpressed anger issues just like his father and brother Ray. Werner has a high need for competency, is skeptical, analytical, and straightforward.

Before pre-med and medical school, Werner used to be much more open and expressive, nerdy, and likeable. After graduating top of his class, he started getting into his own head about his worth and ability, and closed himself off from other people to focus on his studies. He doesn't really have anymore friends outside of workspaces. He dated once in highschool, but quickly broke up with his girlfriend after entering pre-med in the name of focusing on himself more- and focus he did- Werner smoothed out parts of his personality he deemed unprofessional, and excelled through his classes until we get where we are today when the book takes place.

During COTM, Werner has just started his residency as a neurosurgeon/neuroengineer while working at Syntax Labratories. He has gone through all the things he needs and understands how neursurgery, neuroengineering, and any related computerscience needed to do what he does in COTM. Syntax is not the most morally or legally correct facility, which is why Werner is able to work by himself with his lab partner Marvin Hung. Usually, he'd have to do his residency under another neurosurgeon, but because of Werner's prolific work and advances into the field, his bosses at Syntax were able to pull a few strings to help cloak his residency there and any other happenings at Syntax...

Relationships

Ray Fendler

Ray is Werner's little brother. Werner and Ray used to love each other dearly, but drifted ever so slightly. Werner still believes what he's doing is right, and he thinks using Ray for his experiments is a way for both of them to get what they want.

Marvin Hung

Marvin is Werner's lab partner. Werner thinks Marvin is annoying, but used to like him more in highschool and college. The rudeness towards him is a newer thing as Werner has taken on his percieved attitude he wants. They were roomies in college.

Father

Werner's father loves him more than Ray. It's awful to say it, but he does. Werner was from a part of his father's life that was good. The majority of Ray came after the divorce. Werner knows his dad doesn't treat Ray very well and does want to get him away from his dad. Werner is slightly apprehensive of his dad, and uses him for his overall goal. He doesn't "love" him, but doesn't hate him. Werner is just the son, and that's how he sees himself.
