BACKSTORY

At some point in the past hundred years or so, dissatisfied with the continuing growth of humanity and feeling threatened by the rise of technology, the gods of Earth have gone silent. Returning back to their worlds - or simply dying out - the gods and their descendants are taking their magic with them, leaving humanity to its own devices.

In Ireland, the Tuatha Dé Danann have retreated to and completely closed off Tír na nÓg, bringing with them the daoine sídhe who wished to come and promising to one day return for the rest.

Coinciding with the disappearance of the gods, there’s been a rise of creatures that for a lack of any better description consume magic. They are grotesque and shadowy figures that somewhat resemble humans, but go completely unseen by anyone who are unconnected to magic in any way - the majority of humans never know these creatures exist. They target only the dwindling number of supernatural entities left in the world, erasing them from existence before they have a chance to return to their homes.

Back in Ireland, the daoine sídhe have either fled as deep into the wilds as possible to escape the creatures, or gathered in communities in cities to help protect each other with the help of the few remaining human draoithe. Their time is running out.

FATHOM

In early 1985, the Evers move from Liverpool to Dublin.

With them is their neighbour and daughter's best friend, Sango Harland. Coming off a series of personal catastrophes, they decide to start a new life in Ireland with the Evers; Dani rents a flat, and Sango moves in with her. By late summer of 1986, she's settled in marvellously, working at a local roller rink with a large social group. Them, not so much - struggling to land a job and pay their half of rent, Sango's on the dole and more often than not ends up babysitting for the Evers to cover what they owe.

One night at a house party, Dani and Sango run into a pair of strangers speaking about strange and grisly disappearances. One of them, Lir Brennan, propositions Sango - still hurting from the wound of a past relationship, Sango declines but does accept his number, promising to call if they change their mind. They head alone to the beach with their thoughts.

Everything quickly goes to hell.

Sango finds a corpse in the water, and loses track of time and memory. Suddenly the corpse isn't exactly a corpse anymore, and Sango's vomiting seawater, and their arm burns as if their bones are being scraped out.

They go home. They begin to notice people watching them. Dani begins withdrawing, vanishing for days on end.

Sango begins seeing horrific, shadowy monsters...

And Lir won't stop calling.
