Info
- Thought to have descended from relatives of the Boidae family, feather boas (or tufted boas) are a species of reptile that inhabit rain forests and tropical climates. Covered with a thick layer of downy feathers, tufted boas down, (like the hairs on many species of caterpillar) serves as predatory deterrent. Glands within the skin, secrete a specialized venom, that is absorbed into the hollow quills of each feather. This is one of their only sources of defense however, due to their almost non existent fangs. Their unhingeable jaw, aids their ability to swallow large food items. Diet is mostly comprised of eggs, and a small amount of fruit, and vegetation. Unlike many species of Serpentes, feather boas have evolved small legs, almost mammalian in appeqrence. The toes on their front feet are multi- jointed, with the inner most digest, serving a form of semi-opposable thumb. This aids in tool creation as well as the crafting of objects. Certain groups of feathered boas, have also been observed exhibiting semi-social and social behaviors, which is unlike that of most species of reptile. Feather boas retain the ability to coil their body, and often prefer to rest in trees, or other elevated areas. They weigh approximately 5-6 pounds at birth and may reach up to 150 pounds in adulthood, with lengths of up to 8 1/2 feet. Most mature feather boas sport long feathers surrounding the head and neck, which may be raised and lowered. these longer feathers are used in elaborate mating displays.
