fur traders atwood and des are charged with escorting a senator's son, emmett, to a fort in the missouri (formerly louisiana) territory in 1816. only ulysses, emmett's military escort, is aware of the mission's true intentions: to kill emmett in order to save face for his father. it is a journey full of adventure, displacement, and escaping one's past, for better or for worse.
