Both stories focus on a specific culture of colony ships that are very high class and party focused, they care deeply for arts and high appearances. They became so adept living on these ships that indepth knowledge of space travel began to be lost among the common culture. As well as that, there was an expectation to avoid acknowledging the outside at all, like space would get inside and take root if named at all.
