I was gonna make this a poll but the answers are too varied to narrow down to one-offs so I’m making a bit of a discussion post instead!
I want to know how you feel about derivative art! Some qualifiers/leading questions real quick:
- For the sake of simplicity, do not include AI as derivative art in this context; we are only talking about human-made derivatives. AI has an interesting place in this argument but it’s not what I’m curious about.
- What do you personally consider derivative? Do you think imitation has to be purposeful to be considered derivative, or does accidental inspiration count as well?
- Do you think that monetizing derivative work is morally wrong? Do you think these morals should determine the legality of monetizing derivative works?
- What is the bar between a derivative work being insulting and being complimentary? Do you think that should affect legality as well?
- Do you hold beliefs about derivative art that you think would change if someone else was deriving from you? Do you have personal experience with one or both sides of the experience? How do you think your personal feelings about your own art affect your opinion?
- Does the connection between derivative art and fandom culture make you more or less open-minded about it?
Sorry for essentially asking you essay questions, but I’m very curious!!
I am someone who tends to not care what people do with my art; if someone referenced or even traced it I don’t think I’d mind. I just don’t really care if people take heavy inspiration from my art or characters. I consider those things flattering! And many of my own original ideas started out as derivatives when I was young and everything I made was just a knockoff of whatever media I liked at the time. I have a very “do whatever you want forever” attitude about art in general, but I understand that many people feel differently and are quite protective of their creations—I want to know why!

Do you crop your toyhouse images?
im so so curious about this . i am a person who HAS to crop all of the images in my characters' galleries because if the rows dont match i'll go bananas...i wanna know what peoples' different logic is for why they do/don't crop their images. i've seen a LOT of people who don't crop them and i wanna know why. Am I The Weird One (lighthearted)
Been looking into VGen for awhile and would really like to try it for the next time commission slots open; but after looking around I've realized that to get a code through them, you pretty much have to use twitter, which I do not have and am not interested in having :'D so I figured I'd check here and see if any mutuals have a spare code available! no pressure for anyone at all, just figured i'd try asking around first before entering The Discord Mines to try to win one LOL

I've seen a lot of people do PWYW comms where you tell the artist what character + vibes you want and then they do whatever they prefer with that (with quality/time put in depending on the amount spent) and I've been pondering it for awhile...Wouldn't be an immediate offer of course since I'm still working on things at the moment but would anyone like that as a future option?
My main worry is that I wouldn't Do Enough for what people are paying but I feel like that's a concern I have even with normal commissions so it miiight just be an insecurity thing...
I'm aware that a lot of my older codes are currently missing images due to the discord update, and I'm currently working on fixing those! Not sure how long it will take since I'm pretty busy atm, but wanted to clarify that I know they're broken and I'm working on it :]
Might try converting codes from gumroad to mediafire just so their decals are more easily accessible as well...that will come with the updates!
HELLO!!! i was in a very bad art rut for 2 1/2 months where i kept drawing but hating everything i made, so I’ve been avoiding owed art out of that artistic obligation to only do my best work for other people ;w; but IM FREE!! I got a sudden burst of reinvigoration and I’m working on a lot of sketches rn. Thank you to everyone so much for your patience, i should be sending out some wips very soon!!!
