Basic overlooked worldbuilding questions

Posted 6 years, 10 days ago by saaros

source - universe

-Where does the water come from and how is it distributed?

Water systems, or if the zone is very poor or damaged by war, just find it however you can, move or die.

-Who makes the food?

Most poor people cultivates their own, meat is scarce and mostly is high class who can eat it and most types.

-Who transports and distributes the food?

The goverment, for high class, whatever's left, for minorities.

-If your world has modern utilities, are they widespread or only for the rich? For that matter, do utilities have to be modified to work in your world (for example, electric lines with anti-magic coating)?

Most utilities are available for middle class, but only rich has it modified to not be affected by powers/magic.

-What happens to trash?

There are big zones where it's dumped, for the rich, and others were people live among it.

-What happens to sewage?

Rivers, the ocean...

-What building materials are available?

The same as now, but powered people often makes their own if possible.

-What do people do when they get sick?

Most just die, rich don't.

-What do people do in the case of a natural disaster?

Die.

-What do people do in the case of a fire?

Hope for someone with the ability to turn it off in the comunity.

-How are large objects moved?

Sometimes with powered people, others with machines.

-How are items that take skilled labor to make created and distributed?

They are simply distributed to those that can pay, and created for them as well.

world building questions

Posted 6 years, 10 days ago by saaros

source - i'm gonna be talking about this universe. i chose this one since this is the most different to the rest, mosaic and the others i have simply share the normal world as we do.

1. Are women inferior to men (if so, are they not allowed to look men in the eye or speak to men without being spoken to)? Are men inferior to women?

Neither is the case.

2. Do women woo men or do men court women? Either way, how do they go about doing it?

Either case is possible. Cultural.

3. How do marriage proposals work? Are certain people not allowed to get married (i.e. peasants, criminals, gay people, etc)?

Magicians can't get married, everybody else is allowed.

4. Do they marry for love, money/social status, or to strictly reproduce?

Sometimes the later 2 options may happen between high status.

5. Are weddings big events?

Only for rich and powerful.

6. Are certain people not allowed to speak to those of higher social status?

Magicians and most people that don't have higher connection with the goverment.

7. Are there specific gestures one must use when talking to someone of higher/lower status (i.e. curtsy, bowing)

Never looking to their eyes, soldiers and peasants must be always be lower (stairs, or simply bowing).

8. Are people allowed to have physical contact with each other in public? Are people who aren’t married allowed to touch each other at all?

They are.

9. Do men/women have to practice modesty while in public (i.e. hijabs for women)? At what age does this modesty begin?

In certains countries it's prohibited to follow most middle-east religions, in some others, it's only cultural/your decision.

10. Are certain gestures unacceptable (like the middle finger in America)?

Whichever rude one towards high class, whatever puts you off being lower, is your problem.

11. Are there vulgarities or swear words? If so, are certain people not allowed to use them? Are there laws against certain words, and what are the consequences if these laws are broken?

You can't and shouldn't speak about magicians or be agaisn't their dead, you can't teach about them in schools.

12.  Are men/women limited to a certain role? For example, women might be confined to housekeeping and caring for children. (I don’t suggest you use this in your story, though, since it’s cliche and kind of offensive. That is, unless something happens in your story where all the women are totally badass and they revolt against the men.)

None.

13. What do they value in life? It can be money, status, liquor, fun, sex, power, serenity, etc.

Status and power.

14. How do siblings interact? Is one sibling more important than the other based on age? Does the older sibling assume more responsibility? (Is incest socially acceptable?)

Incest is your bussines, no one cares, or no one won't say shit if you're high class. Anything else is cultural.

15. How do parents interact? Are they distant or warm? Do they see each other as equals or is one better than the other? Do parents support children or do children have to fend for themselves after a certain age?

It varies like in the real world, but let's say that role model ones are distant, since you don't know when they're gonna die; unless you're high class, then the asshole that turns is up to them.

16. Are elders and babies/children respected or ridiculed?

If you're not high class, you're not respected, at least they won't; between peasants, people try to respect each other equally.

17. In many Caribbean islands, children refer to their grandmothers as ‘mother’, or mama, mommy, etc. In Guyanese culture, the English word for the woman who gives birth to a child is ‘auntie’. Maybe there’s something like that in your society.

Nothing I can think of, but those things might still exist on this world, if these cultures didn't die off.

i'm gonna be talking about this universe. source.

1. How is it learned and executed?

They are born with it, but they, of course, don't know how to use it properly, so it is teached in their school with a similar training to militarity. It is also fair to mention that it's not considered magic, but abilities. The one that is called magic is banned and people with this power is killed.

2. How is it accessed?

Again, they are born with it. Humans weren't able to have these powers before, but through gene editing it was possible. (Don't ask me how that makes sense, it's fantasy).

3. Does it have a will of its own?

No.

4. Is it restricted in space and time?

Some are, such as the elemental, since you obviously can't do water-control on a desert, for example. But neither are restricted for time.

5. What does available magic do?

Most things, there are telekinesis, strenght (which makes you into sorta into Colossus), elements-control (because I wante dto rip-off Avatar), and magic. Pretty sure I'm missing some.

6. How does it relate to the character, plot and theme of the book?

Well, the gene editing program was created to fight in war, a war that has been distroying the humanity (and planet) for almost 2 centuries, a war promoted by tyrants. After a long while the gene simply became part of the humans, and prophecies were born, that one day 3 magicians would end with the suffering, but seeing as most of them are dead, seems unlikely. The characters, are 2 powerful rich ones, from which one tries to have a normal life since she feels shame for living in that way; and the other two, are poor and live what's normal. Though the youngest has magic powers, and a fire in the house of the powerful ones kills all their family; they go in the run, someone is trying to kill them, and they have to protect the youngest, not because of the prophecy, but just becasue her life is worth living!

7. What is the cost of magic?

Well, dead for some.

8. What can it not do?

It depends on which type you got, but for the most powerful ones (magicians), it imitates all powers but for a limited time, and it's own power isn't the most powerful of them all (magic is basically a copy-cat).

9. How long does it last?

Magicians can make it last depending on their training knowledge, elements can make it last as lon as the elements last and/or are destroyed (ie. a wall of rock won't simply fall down unless it's taken down), and the rest simply get tired at certain point, or injuried, but last the double of magic or more. There aren't set times, but averages.

10. Who can use it?

Anyone born with it.

11. How do others react to it?

Magic = bad, anything elsee = power or soldiers.

12. Why haven’t people with this power taken over the world?

They have, it's believed that the leaders are some sort of hybrid magicians that don't have the full power of one, or aren't really one.

plot & story development questions

Posted 6 years, 10 days ago by saaros
  • Why should audiences be interested in watching what your protagonists do? Are you trying to take your audience on an adventure, or are you just writing out a log of all the things you wish you could do or what you wish your life could be like? The latter is often fun to write, but not often fun to read.
The story is centered on a group of people, we will see them trying to stick together (at first) for multiple interests that mix between them. Later, we'll discover that they start to get attached to each other, but neither of them (except one) is that good at handling relationships, some worse than others, and it will be a big path to trust for them. Likewise, there will be a "side story" which would be the motivations and reasons that got them together on the first place; being heroes, except that not all of them are, or that they don't care following the hero protocol exactly as it should be. This, of course, causes conflict between them and everybody's moralities, which makes their relationship struggle all the time, but even so, they have meant so many good things to them that by the time they realize, they're in too deep to let go. (And now, I definitely don't wanna do or go through any of the thing they do, honestly).
  • Why should audiences care about your protagonists, or what happens to your protagonists?
I pretty much explained the same thing on the first paragraph, but I can go and rant on it again; there will be two main points of the story, if we extremely simplify it, of course, and those will be a. their friendship and b. their moral, first of all, these characters are either outcasts or outlaws, even the most normal of them is to their own family and species, so they're a big mishap of similar things, hence why they're called Mosaic. Both their personal relationships will mix with their morals, as they will build a team to fight evil/crime (the fun part, yahoo!), and while we have heroes on the group, there are others that don't mind stepping out of the line to protect, or even, some that pretend being a hero when they even can't convince themselves of it. So, if you find this fun, then this is why. (And because I'm gonna make you love them so much you can't let go).
  • What experience does your story offer audiences that they probably haven’t already experienced in a similar story?
Don't try looking into the background of how some got powers 'cause you got all that on both Marvel and DC, so better you can think of it as a more gore-y MLP with superpowers; I hope that's new enough. (Wasn't there recently The Defenders, though? Which is basically this? Oh shut up!)
  • What are the main obstacles to be faced? What makes them legitimate challenges or threats?
I'M NOT WRITTING THAT AGAIN. No, for real, the question 1 & 2 basically got this, but there will be others, like more related to the villians they will face, such as one of them is the father of one of the guys part of Mosaic (boy, those were many of's). So even though their personal relationships will be a huge play, there will be challenges and threats that aren't those. (I don't wanna spoil, damn you!).
  • Why should audiences care whether the protagonists succeed or not? What's at stake? What would happen if they fail?
If they don't manage to get along, to grow together and overcome, then their friendship are over. If they don't defeat enemies, people might die, that people could be other members of Mosaic or just innocent people. And, for one of them, if he dies (to is desire to die, or if he is killed) the whole world will suffer the attack of powerful interdimentional creatures.
  • What motivates the main characters into taking on these challenges?
Well, they're aprox. 6-7 characters, and each got their own. I can't just say "because they wanna save people" because, in reality, not all of them got it that simple. Some do it for the thrill, the fun, they'll live forever so what's the matter? Others for personal demons that they want, that they need, to overcome, to prove themselves as something better. And lastly, the rest, really does wanna save innocents. And that's for saving people, which is what ot them together in the first place (sorta), so you can assume that one thing connects to another... (the friendship talk is getting tiring, don't worry I won't let the comic be this obvious).
  • What will the protagonists lose or have to give up to see their goals through? What hard choices will they have to make?
Sometimes, their friends, other times, innocents lives, but often and most importantly, themselves.
  • If your story is set in a fantasy world, what makes the conflicts in your world familiar and identifiable to people like us, who don’t live in your fantasy world?
The interpersonal relationships, the ethnicities, the personalities, their "real world" jobs, and whatever you feel connected to.
  • What unexpected complications will arise that will make things more difficult than the protagonists anticipated? How will they adapt?

It's hard to answer these without spoiling, you know? Anyway, I dunno man, somethings I'll make on the go, what else can I say that I haven't already without gotting to much info out? And no, sometime they won't adapt, because sometimes real people can't adapt, or don't know how.

  • What events will prompt the characters change and develop over the course of the story? How will they change?

Theeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrr friendship. Some of them will change for worse or better, and viceversa.

  • How will the events of the story change the status quo of the protagonists’ world forever? Will all of these changes be good?

Finally something I can answer! If some changes get to happen, they could end the world, if others do, they could save lives and send criminals to jail (or hell, depends on how does the job). They will discover truths that could put at stake all things humanity knows, and how they see their world, lives and history, if they choose to tell.

  • Where will your protagonists be at the end of the story? What will they be doing? How satisfied will they all be with their situations?

WELL, there's no end? I wanna treat my comic like Marvel/DC does, it's just another chapter of their lives, so this question is chapter based, or arc based, since they might as well never end.

  • What will your protagonists have learned by the end of the story? How will their perspectives and opinions changed?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(they might've learned the power of friendshior fucked it all, also, maye become the villians of the next arc).

  • Are there any scenes or passages you could remove from the story, and still have the story make perfect sense and still have the audience know everything they need to know? If so, prune them off.

Don't think so.

  • Are there any characters you could remove and still have the story work? Could you combine the roles of multiple characters and still tell the story just as effectively? If so, do it.

Not really. Everybody represents something different and acts differently.

anyway, credits goes to this wonderful page filled with resourses; I recommend doing this 'meme' to mostly answer yourself, certain things i left oout without much answer were answered in my head, if you happen to not want to spoil no one, either. I was talking all the time 'bout this universe, and you guys can only see 2 characters because I still got a designing job to do, but their personalities are fleshed out already. I could've done this meme with any of my other ones, but i'm particulary actively working on this one mostly, so there's that.
