Estrella is a unicorn priestess. actually she's the Ascended, a bridge between unicorns and the moon goddess they worship, Mo'anne. her mother Charisma is a powerful unicorn and her human father Lux disappeared before Estrella was born. together Estrella and Marisol serve their Goddess and their little village of unicorn folks.
     when her mother leaves suddenly to find her father and Marisol disappears not long after, Estrella must leave her duties to the Goddess behind to try and find them both, and hopefully her father, too.

     Marisol is the high priestess of her generation. she and Estrella have been best friends since they were foals, and they love working together in the temple. her father is also a human man. but she and her mother are happy and fulfilled without him.
     determined to help Estrella find her mother, Marisol tries going down forbidden paths to find answers. but she disappears in the process, sending her on a journey of the dark night of the soul and finding her true power.

     a moon goddess that is the primary deity unicorns worship. She created the first unicorn eons ago and they are Her most precious creation. She is a dual-goddess, two halves and one whole, the light and dark side of the moon. the darker, wilder side is called the River.
     for reasons that may only be known to Her, She chose Estrella as the Ascended, a powerful priestess that answers to no one but the Goddess, at a very young age. Charisma says that the Goddess is making plans and moving.

     Estrella's mother, once the high priestess herself. 30 years ago, she met a fatally wounded human man in her forest and she nursed him back to health. his name was Lux and they fell in love. when Charisma became pregnant with Estrella, Lux left to settle his affairs at home, but hasn't returned.
     Charisma has spoken with the Goddess, Who has assured her that she and Lux are still to be together. so she waits, patiently, for as long as she can...

     Lux Holden was left for dead on a strange island when a unicorn found him and began the long journey to heal him. the longer Charisma nursed him, the deeper they fell in love. he stayed with Charisma for 6 months; when she fell pregnant, he felt torn between his new family and his old. since it would be a year before Estrella was born, he went north to his home to settle his affairs and return to his mate and child... but he hasn't been heard from in 30 years.

     Fleur is the de facto head of the Council of Elders. at well-over 1000 years old, she is an Ancient. most of her time is spent watching over the priestesses; she was a priestess long ago, too.
     she has mentored Estrella and Charisma both closely and both come to her for advice. behind her stern facade is a long, lonely story that she carries in her heart next to her shame.

     a human (??!?) man who Estrella meets near the beginning of her journey; his current gig is selling fake unicorn items (horn powder, hair, etc) and they get off on the wrong foot before finding decency between them. Bii is insistent that she trust Tobias since he also trusted her with his secret: he hasn't aged in many decades.
     he comes along with Estrella, since she's stopping by many holy sites on her way, hoping to find some answers to his past and his identity.

     Bii is a small, cute magical creature, but that's not his true form. it's his power-saving mode; his true form is a very powerful magical beast. he is living near Oryn when Estrella meets him, and he comes along with her. he's perfectly capable of speaking clearly, but chooses to be evasive and secretive, mostly communicating psychically through thoughts and impressions.

     a mysterious unicorn who gives off a prismatic, shifting glow from within. it's not clear what she wants, other than to get in Estrella's way as much as possible. she seems to blame Estrella for her unhappiness and there's a few fights with her.

     a super old ancient male unicorn, from The First generation of unicorns. he lives on the nearby human-inhabited island, out in the forest. he has a lot of knowledge both magical and mundane, unicorn and human. Bii has been living with him for some time for some reason.

     the oldest unicorn known on the continent of Arcelia. Cassiopeia is from The First generation, created by the goddess' hands eons ago. she spends her days as she pleases, her years of service long behind her. a few thousand years ago, she and Fleur founded the village on the island they simply call Home.
     when Fleur won't help Estrella any further, she comes to Cassiopeia for information, who readily answers whatever Estrella asks, but in her strange, ancient way.

     Echo is an Ancient unicorn, over 1000 years old. her real name is forgotten; she goes by a name that humans called her at one time. she helps ease creatures across the threshold from life to death, a role that has given her bad experiences with humans. she serves on the Council now and mentors priestesses. she has a deep gift for healing and cycles, and tends to Dreja when she becomes ill.

     Sky has the Goddess birthmarks of a priestess, but she started seeing ghosts and whatnot at a very early age, so her mother had her train under Echo instead. she is the keeper of the ferry that is the only way from the unicorns' island to the nearby human-inhabited continent.
     she does a lot of veil-related magic and maintenance, working with spirits and stuff like that.

     Marisol's mom! she fell deeply in love with a human man named Jasper for a season, then they parted ways shortly before Lyric knew she was pregnant. she and her daughter have always been whole with just the two of them. Lyric has always been Charisma's best friend, so it's nice that their daughters have so much in common and are so close, too.
     Lyric isn't a priestess like Charisma or her daughter. she is mostly a homemaker and hearth-keeper. her magic deals with plants, specifically flowers. she always wears flowers in her hair. she has a twin sister named Dreja.
