Weird post-artblock problem?

Posted 1 year, 5 months ago by Johtozo

So as my commissioners have probably noticed (or really everyone), my art output has DRASTICALLY decreased the past half year or so due to stress (do NOT take two jobs on top of uni omg), which really fucked me over because it meant that anyone expecting art from me had to wait a long time ): though if you ever bother to peep my art tab it's been slowly picking up (FINISHED A FEW COMMISSIONS TODAY! WOO!) and I'm feeling pretty fresh!

Though I noticed that after not drawing for so long I actually couldn't draw digitally. Like, the first two days trying to get back into it, I actually had a hard time trying to control my movements on the tablet and it really reflected on my drawing.

Today it has massively improved (hence the commissions being done), but one thing has remained and it's like, so weird? I noticed that I now draw hands really small. Like the fucking opposite of yaoi hands, proportionally everything is fine and I'm quite comfortable with drawing hands usually but I kept drawing the hands really fucking small, like, cartoonishly and laughably small, I want to crawl into hell and beg for the devil's forgiveness. Even when I resized them it looked so fucking off.

I don't know if anyone experienced weird proportion-related problems after getting back into drawing stuff beyond sketches after... half a year? It's kind of funny but also it wastes so much of my time trying to correct literally ONE body part I thought I was comfortable drawing OTL

I can definitely relate to this and man the burnout happens as little as a week.. ;0; best thing I can say is try drawing the same thing multiple times in different poses, different angles… look at yourself doing the motions, look at newspapers / the like! Just gotta reactivate the muscle memory!! I believe in you lach!

yeahhh I know what you mean... You can get rusty with any hobby if you haven't practised them for a while. Tennis, pottery, gaming, drawing... but don't worry! It's just a little bump in the road! Once you get back into the groove of things and sleep on it a couple of times, it'll be like you never stopped drawing digitally   you've got this

i remember having a problem like that when i was younger [and im sort of anticipating getting it again since i had to halt my art for a while due to a wrist injury  ]

i kept drawing the mouths too high or too low, and i could never get it looking right! later i realized that the issue i was noticing wasn't actually the base of the issue - my problem was that i drew the nose too far up, and the chin too long - with that sort of style, no placement of the mouth really looked natural. so it might help to look at things besides the hands - you might actually be drawing the wrists too thin to allow for a hand you like, or you might be drawing the forearm too wide.... im not sure if this will help anyone, but it did help me going forward to be happy with my proportions... good luck on your queue!

AW NOOOO.... I hope it gets better! ]: that must suck so much...

But yes omg you really put the problem into perspective... I looked back on my drawings and it seems that going out of drawing for too long just threw me off proportions, and that the hands were just the most noticeable one (I started noticing the nose/mouth problem you described too, so it's definitely just drawing in general). Thanks so much for the advice!!

WOOOO nice job crushing your comms !!!! whenever i stop drawing for a while the faces always come out bug eyed and lopsided OUGH so i feel that. im sure you'll get back into the swing of it very soon though and im hyped to see any art you end up making!!!! your style is the best !! :oD

HEHE thank you friend!!! :D well wishes to you too!!

ahh I relate to this a lot :'0

I recently had to drop out of college and while that gave me the chance to pick up drawing again the way i used to, the amount of time i had gone without doing anything more than sketches and quick doodles definitely affected the way my art looked. It was really disheartening at first, but slowly i've been managing to get the hang of things again after practicing a little every chance i get ;;

I recommend for you to take things at your own pace, don't pressure yourself too much ! it can def be frustrating at times when things don't turn out the way you want them to or how they used to but with time and practice it will all start coming back. Even just practicing or doodling stuff for a couple minutes whenever you're free helps.

I hope everything starts looking up soon ! I know how stressful juggling so many things at once can be so please take care of yourself too ;; <3

Thank you!!! And whew yeah school seems to affect my output so much, I'm currently having sparse lectures so my "drawing abilities" seem to be coming back... college is the root of evil of my hobby but it's just something I must adapt to HAHA

But thank you for the advice! It's definitely coming back so fingers crossed things will be back to the way it used to be, hehe

I went through something very similar. I didn't draw for like a whole month and when i felt like doing so, my hand felt heavy and my attention just wasn't there. I kinda force myself to doodle little things and little by little, sketching daily even for 5 mins helped. It did cost me at first but by day 4 my hand moved on its own as always!

Hope that helps and also that you get a hold pf things soon so stress can't take over as much as possible. I really like your art, it would be a shame to miss on it ^^

YES my hand felt so heavy too and there seemed to be like such a heavy fog in my brain... you're right though I've been drawing bit by bit every day and it seems to help :D

And thank you so much!!! Hoping I can get on it so I can draw more hehe
