So I wake up to this and I just can't help but sigh... I'm so tired of AI, I can't even get angry about it anymore.

I remember growing up with movies about robots taking over humanity and how these movies, made only 20+ years ago, seemed so far away from what technology was actually capable of. They were commentary on physical labour being replaced with machines, but the thought of genuinely good artificial intelligence was Pure Science Fiction. Then as I entered my teens ridiculous websites like Cleverbot were all the rage to play with and make youtube videos about. And I remember it being surreal to have a conversation with a computer at all, even if most interactions eventually turned incomprehensible. It was just silly fun, seeing what computers were growing to be capable of. No one would genuinely choose to talk to Cleverbot over a real human person long-term.

And then we enter the 2020's and automation just... skyrockets. stuck at home, people are stuck scrolling on tiktok's FYP bc the algorithm has figured out exactly what keeps you hooked... People studying for physically practised jobs are taking their classes online and then bragging to me about not having a clue what their successfully finished tests were about because they made AI write entire papers for them... Teens are roleplaying with an AI bot rather than other teens... My grandma bought 2 AI generated pictures of a butterfly, mistaking them for being real because she doesn't know AI exists yet... Worldwide a bunch of artists get their voice work, illustrations and music work replaced and stolen with AI to make things cheaper... More and more youtubers become dead-set on running a channel that's fully automated AI work... And no matter how much you raise your voice against it and voice all the concerns about it, every website available takes huge interest and indulges it.

What am I to think of that?

How do you walk away from that, without leaving the internet in its entirety?

As a lover of history, I've always looked at my grandma and silently wondered how she adapted with the times at all. How she didn't stick with certain fashion styles and how she was able to wrap her head around the ever evolving technological landscape in general. Sure there are still things she's hesitant about, like owning a smartphone or going to the self-check out, but all things considered she and many others her age are doing remarkable! And it's at those times I look at her and wonder, what's the world going to look like when I'm in my 70's? How much will technology have evolved by then, and how much will I be able to understand?

But truth be told, I can't even concept up what the world's going to look like in 10 years, let alone 50! these past 10 years have already been so astronomically different, I wouldn't know where to start. The only thing I feel more confident about is that the future looks grim in many aspects, be it global warming, capitalism, war, the housing market or this new wave of AI. There's a lot that need changing, but the people who speak up about it aren't being heard. I haven't got the foggiest where such a scenario would lead. I just hope I'm wrong!

Anyways, I'm not going to stop posting on Tumblr. I guess in the current online landscape there's no way to post your art and not have it be misused in some way unless you glaze and shade it or whatever.
Which, I guess, I'm going to have to start looking into.

And for the blue moon chance some AI fanatic is reading this, my TOS already states my art is not to be fed to any AI machines. If you do so, I'm not afraid to make it into a problem.

Sorry for the grim post on this Wednesday, hope the rest of your day/night will be more lovely!

I miss when AI was generally used for fun instead of all this professional shtick. It's cool to mess around with but to use professionally?? Hell no.

You can opt out of them selling your images to AI but its kinda hidden-
but if you go to every blog you have and go to the blog settings u can scroll down and opt out! Here's an example image someone posted of the option0d49e5270f2d1d897751b009f76e5596d954db54

thank you!!

This is insane.

Last year, ai was easy to poke fun of for the results being so blurry and known for generating hands with an excessive number of fingers on them.

Now ai looks so "advanced" that i cant tell what is real. It "fixed" its previous issues and now half my google search results when I look for references and such are ai generated. I honestly cant think of the equivalent of a moment in time where technology has spread so fast in one or two years. I get extremely disappointed when I see a cool drawing on instagram now, only to find out an ai made it instead of a real person.

Not to mention, My Instagram feed is now full of artists bringing awareness about OpenAI's Sora, which is an ai text to video generator. I've seen clips of it and I actually feel sick to my stomach. I honestly believe people can frame others for committing crimes just by stealing a picture of their face and putting it in that generator. I am dead serious when I say this has the potential to cause more wars.

Im still baffled that artists and voice actors are the only ones speaking up and out against this! This isn't just a problem for us, it is effecting EVERYONE.

I don't want to fear monger, but AI has to be regulated badly. It needs to have a watermark over generations to stop fooling people. Artists and voice actors should be given royalties if their content is used in generators WITH THEIR CONSENT.

Sorry to ramble on, but I never really said anything about this issue before, and just wanted to throw my two cents in.

For months I've been battling with those thoughts "if an ai can regurgitate art then why should I bother?" and "i"ll be replaced" but I did not spend my entire existence on this planet drawing and perfecting my creations for fun and self expression, just to be ward off by machines and corporate greed.

Best of luck to you and for all of us <3

i agree so heavily with everything you just said oh my god,,, It truly is so scary how realistic AI has gotten in such a short time and I too believe it could 100% create huge social and political problems... We already live in a time where the saying "seeing is believing" doesn't hold any weight anymore... Imagine the consequences these potential scenarios could have in COURT with falsified evidence.

And you're right, it's so hard to be motivated in art sometimes with these machines on the market... but as long as we hold on to our love and passion for the craft, we'll pull through I think!

Something positive I want to add onto this too,,,, I used to try recreating some of my OCs on ai art generators and see how accurate the results were.

All of them kept defaulting to the Disney/Pixar style as the "standard". And the more specific I got with a character's key features, like the body type or outfit pattern, the more the ai wouldn't know how to apply it.

Ai can only go based off of previous patterns, and I find comfort that my OCs are too silly for AI to reimagine!

Plus the nightshade and gloss is a start for artists to fight against it! Take that robots!!!

I don't blame you at all. Everything in modern day seems to have changed so drastically from what it once was. When there was once an appreciation for the art and writing that people created, now everyone wants to monetize and make a commodity of it while having the audacity of feeling entitled to a person's creations. People have the nerve to treat other peoples' creations as quick fast food catered to them then ask "where did all the creators go? Why don't they post anymore?" in the same breath without realizing that their behavior chased them off b/c no one wants to feel taken advantaged of for something that they do for FUN.

Best of luck going forward!! Hope things can get better sooner rather than later. ❤️

ALL OF THIS... the way art and creations are treated online really is much like fast food. best of luck to you too!

arrgh that's so stupid- it pisses me off to know that people's work that they've invested years into can just be thrown to AI that easily

I've been working on my universe for around four years at this point and I DEFINITELY don't want my scientifically accurate maps to be used to train AI

anyways, best of luck to you in the future-

oaugh that'd be so scary, to have 4 years worth of hard work be stolen in an instant like that... best of luck to you too!
