The comic idea was mainly stumbling upon a sad Gatlin smoking, commenting on not knowing he still smoked, then the line about how he only does it socially, which is a contradiction, given he was literally found smoking alone. But then he goes on to explain that it REMINDS him of people and being social, and how, therefore, smoking—even when alone—makes him feel less lonely.

(All of which is literally in the story, BUT YEAH. THAT WAS THE COMIC IDEA. I really liked it, so I wanted to get that stuff out in SOME form.)

The second-biggest thing for me was the whole concept of vampires only being able to subsist by stealing other people's lifeforces, having none of their own to nurture, but I don't think I handled it the best. Even now, I can't word it perfectly, but I really like the concept.

I love goofy-sad characters, capable of both comic relief AND tragedy. A perfect balance. (Which is why I mentioned that when writing this, I felt that Maldreth could slot right into a lot of stuff—especially the ending. When he hops up on the railing, despite the protests, then decides to keep going anyway, I kept thinking "This is Maldreth-coded. This could 100% be Maldreth.")

Though some of that is just my style of humor. They're both kind of quirky himbos who do what they want, and this is how I write quirky himbos who do what they want.
