i wouldn't know how to help if you don't show me what your code looks like !!
but: if you wanted 3 items instead of 4, you'd want to have threecol-lg-4 instead of four col-lg-3... does that make better sense? because 3 (items) x 4 (grids) = 12 (full row)! you don't really need to worry about the col-md-6 until you're more confident in the bootstrap grid ^^
