its mostly about their depictions in media, they are from native american folklore but in recent years have been getting used a lot in things like horror games and movies in a version that is not only bastardized from the original but that also disrespect the belief that they bring bad luck even by just having their names being mentioned, so generally just seeing them around and being mentioned is considered both very disrespectful by native american people from my understanding of it
do keep in mind while im native im not native american so what im saying comes more from having native american friends that have spoken about the subject and from reading articles on the topic so in case you are still curious about it i would really recommend searching for some articles because there are some really interesting ones around from the native american perspective talking about it
by my understanding of it just the general mention of them is considered bad but it depends from person to person if an inaccurate representation is worse or not, in one hand while them being inaccurate shows a lack of research and care put into the portrayals it can also make it easier for people who believe in them to distance their culture from what is being show on screen, in the other hand if the portrayal is accurate that makes it a lot harder to do but also is considered more respectful and because of how misused they are in media its more likely that accurate showings of them come from someone who is native or that at least put their time and care into studying and understands better than to make them the main focus
