It's sadly hard to see how my style's progressed when you see one really recent piece uploaded and one really old piece drawn with a mouse and no guidelines.
Oh yeah, the best way to fix it is to not rely on Black, instead, you have to get the color of the area you are going to shade, and make it darker. but not by too much.

Thanks! I haven't used black shading in a while.
(I use the opposite color of the color of the area I'm shading; is that good as well?)

Well, it depends, but for the best results, darken the shade of color you used for your flat color
