I usually find an image I already like the color scheme of and color pick until I get something I like ! Either that or I just experiment until I like the result !
I do that sometimes too ! I usually put a cream color (on a new layer) over the color layer and try out the different filters (aka - multiply, soft light, hue, etc) until I find colors I like !

I personally like warmer and less saturated colors so I usually go for those !
