First off, to have you compliment me and ask me for advice is such a nice feeling dude, so thank you ! ;x;
And as for backgrounds, there’s tons of things I use to help with that !
1) use pinterest - there are tons of helpful images on there that I use to get inspiration ! There is no shame in using references photos.
2) Take your own pictures - Taking your own pictures helps if you think your art can sometimes be too close to the original reference. (I use this method most !)
Looking at other artist for inspiration is also good ! Any media can be used as inspiration as long as you don’t copy it too closely !

I wanted to ask, was this by chance inspired by Jared Pike’s ”dream Pools”? If not, you should definitely check them out if you like liminal space!!!! They’re very surreal and beautiful, and that piece of art just reminded me of them!!

I usually find an image I already like the color scheme of and color pick until I get something I like ! Either that or I just experiment until I like the result !

I do that sometimes too ! I usually put a cream color (on a new layer) over the color layer and try out the different filters (aka - multiply, soft light, hue, etc) until I find colors I like !
